Pilates For Knee Pain | Step by Step Guide | Complete Pilates 25/02/2024

This is a summary for my Yoga & Pilates students on what new topics we've been working on in my classes so far this year:

1: knee stability
We covered more than this resource provides, including correcting your stance standing, from the feet (your foundation) and using the wall as reference, to better engage the stabilisers of the knee. We also focussed on thorough warming up of the hips as tight hips are a common contributor to knee issues. 2: balance (with a special focus on proprioception)
We did some of these exercises, as well as a few others, i.e. where we reached to pick up a block through a single leg balance, hinging through the hips. It's important to pair a your balance practice with lower limb strengthening. Here are some simple balance exercises that can be comppleted at home (remember to be in bare feet, and imprint each of the four corners of your sole of foot when balancing): https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/balance-exercises/

3. neck and upper trapezius releasing
If this is a chronically tight area for you this is best treated with a combination of methods, not limited to deep tissue massage and more regular movement of these areas. I recommend cat/ cow, half or full head rolls, self massage of the area, and forward folding (to help decompress the neck).

BREAKING DOWN THE PILATES AB SCOOP 17/12/2023

This is a summary for my Yoga & Pilates students on what we've been working on in my classes for the last three weeks:

Week 1: the importance of joint preparations
Take a look at this resource. These are different exercises to what we did in class but the same concept applies.

Week 2: creating the scoop
This video shows a slightly different way compared to how I teach the scoop. I tend to teach the "drawing in" and "drawing up" together rather than in two separate parts. Take a look.

Week 3: scapulation/ scaption - shoulder blade mobility and control
And unfortunately I could find a resource I was happy enough with in regards to this. I will just have to start making my own ;).

In other news... I'm currently working on my very own website!

This feels like a big step for me considering how long I've managed to avoid doing it... πŸ˜…

I'm very excited for what I'll be able to offer next via my website, especially for when I'm not available in-person for classes, workshops or privates.

Today I finally got around to having my first Yoga practice in Japan. It was Hatha, and tomorrow it will be Ashtanga. I like how their classes are 1.5 hours long (as a minimum) and include a thorough warm-up. Especially for these tired legs which have done A LOT of walking.

Here's some snaps from my trip so far! I can't wait to visit again. ⛩️❀️

Also, in other news, I'm broadening my teaching expertise. Later this year I'll be training in Ashtanga in Northern India. I will also be saying goodbye to NZ from June as I head overseas to live.
