A Living Legend

On Thursday 20 June, Christchurch Boy's High had the immense privilege of hosting 18 Canterbury schools to experience hearing from Minnijean Brown-Trickey and her daughter Spirit Tawfiq. Minnijean has spent her life campaigning for equality, she identifies as a pacificist, but it is her immense bravery in the face of school integration in Little Rock, Arkansas that she is most recognised for. Spirit took the students through the tumultuous timeline of one the most influential occurrences to come out of the 1950s Black Civil Rights movement. Sharing candid images from the time Spirit explained the tenacity that was required for the Little Rock Nine to follow through with their legal, moral and human rights to access education.

Minnijean shared many memories and experiences from her time at Central Highschool, now 82 years old, she was just 16 when she experienced what seems unimaginable to us now. Requiring a personal armed guard to be able to walk school hallways with some degree of safety is beyond comprehension for our students, many of whom are the same age as Minnijean when she fought so bravely for her education. There were spontaneous rounds of applause and cheers from the 1300 odd students as Minnijean shared how she maintained her dignity to fight back.

There are times in life when you know you have been in the presence of a legend; last Thursday was that day for our students.

A once in a lifetime opportunity that will not be quickly forgotten.

Pasifika students enjoying a waka hourua (voyaging canoe) experience at Lyttelton marina on the Hinemoana. Boys did knot tying and a star compass navigation workshop as well as a voyage out into the Lyttelton harbour. A fantastic day getting closer to their roots, understanding of indigenous knowledge and enjoying each others company. A huge thank you to Faumuina Felolini Maria Tafuna’i and her team at Wayfinding for Life for giving the boys this experience.

Japan Tour 2024 - A Huge Success

21 students and three teachers have just taken part in a three-week cultural study tour of Japan and, as in previous years, the tour was a resounding success.
Year 12 and 13 students, many of whose families had been involved in a range of fundraising events for almost a year, put their language skills and cultural knowledge to the test in the toughest environment possible. Experiencing Japan first-hand is an onslaught for the senses – everything buzzes, beeps or sings at you, elevators thank you for using them and then there are the copious train platform announcements…

Duke of Edinburgh at CBHS

There is an exciting opportunity for Year 9 and 10 boys to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award here at Boys High. The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award equips rangatahi for promising futures by challenging young people to develop skills and tools to improve themselves – and their communities. With guidance from Award Leaders at school, each young person is encouraged to examine themselves - their interests, their ambitions, and set challenges for the four Award sections: Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills, and Adventurous Journey. This also provides an excellent opportunity for boys to gain points to go towards the fine young man award here at school.

If you would like to find our more, please register your interest here (https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=iO-FkklHhUqDNaDJeOJPx7aiffFInVJJt0Q-BuTRddZUNDBRSlJaSk0xOFRDR0dURjRBMjYwWVM4US4u) and receive an invite for our parent and student information evening coming soon in the new term. More information about the award can be found online at the DofE Hillary Award website (https://dofehillary.org.nz/participants/how-the-award-works/).
