Congratulations to everyone who graduated this Spring, and a special acknowledgment to our PhD Distinction Award winners- Dr Felipe Kuncar, Dr Karan Titus, and Dr Zhe Zhang.

These awards are reserved for the top 10% of doctoral graduates, and each recipient has demonstrated an exceptional track record of high-impact publications, national and international recognition, strong citation performance, and meaningful contributions to their fields of research.

It was an honour for me to present these certificates on behalf of the Department of UC Civil and Environmental Engineering. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and excited to see the impact their work will continue to have in the years ahead.

Here’s to bold ideas, and the difference our graduates will make in the world!

After 24 years of service, we’re saying farewell to Prof Mark Davidson as he heads into a well-earned retirement.

Mark has been a calm, steady presence in our department known for his engaging teaching style, generous mentorship, and quiet but powerful leadership. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with him over the years, first when he was the Undergraduate Director, and later during his time as HOD.

What I’ve always admired is how he led with trust and empowered others to grow. He once nominated me for a teaching award early in my career: a gesture I’ll never forget, and one that says a lot about who Mark is. Always encouraging, always supportive.

Mark’s mantra was “play to your strengths," something he truly lived by, and encouraged in all of us.

Wishing you all the best in this next chapter, Mark. We hope you get to spend plenty of time with your family and doing more of what you love. Thank you for everything
