It was a pleasure to host our annual Civil and UC Civil and Environmental Engineering Postgraduate Research Conference last month.
With the theme Engineering the Future: Research and Practice in the Age of AI, the conference showcased the incredible breadth and impact of postgraduate research happening across our department - from earthquake engineering and climate adaptation to sustainable energy, transport systems, construction innovation and fire safety engineering.
We were fortunate to hear from Jason Hill (Trimble Inc.) on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in engineering practice, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges AI brings to our profession.
A highlight of the day was seeing our postgraduate researchers share their work through oral presentations, flash talks and poster sessions, connecting with academics, alumni and industry professionals. The passion, creativity and real-world impact of their research continue to inspire us.
Congratulations to all our award winners and presenters for their outstanding contributions. A special thank you to our industry partners and speakers for sharing their expertise and supporting the next generation of engineers.
My sincere thanks also to our Postgraduate Directors, Assoc Prof Hamish Mackey and Assoc Prof Brian Guo, and everyone who contributed to making this a successful and memorable event.
Our postgraduate researchers are helping shape a more sustainable and innovative future, and it is exciting to see the journey ahead. Rajesh Dhakal
