We recently came across this postcard of the Wainoni Pleasure Garden, which was on the horseshoe bend of the Avon River between Wainoni Road and Pages Road.
Professor William Alexander Bickerton (the first professor of Chemistry at Canterbury College, now Canterbury University) bought the land in 1880. His house became a social point for his students and then used for an experiment in co-operative living.
But Christchurch in the early 1900s was not ready for this so Bickerton came up with the idea of the pleasure garden. It opened in 1903 with a number of activities to see and do including shooting galleries, open air concerts, glass blowing, a planetarium, a zoo and mock naval battles on a man-made lake.
After 4 years of wet public holidays, the financial state of the garden was very poor and the pleasure garden was sold in 1914 to meet debts and eventually subdivided. The lion cubs in the Museum’s 'Discovery' Centre, came from the park.
Kia ora koutou, just a reminder about the Educated in Aranui Alumni event tomorrow at Haeata Community Campus- 240 Breezes Rd. Starts at 6pm with nibbles and a chat. We want to celebrate education in the East- everyone who has taught or attended a school in Aranui is welcome. Pass it on to people you know who may be interested- looking forward to catching up with you tomorrow. 😊
Hey everyone, just sharing this here. It is open to everyone who was educated or taught in the Aranui area.
Would love to see lots of you there!

This morning I went to the official opening of the ANZAC Fire and Emergency Station. The Wainoni Jubilee committee had purchased this plaque to go on the site as a memorial to our school. It is in a prime position right beside the main entrance. It’s a beautiful facility which will benefit the community immensely.
