Today our Year 7 and 8 students ventured out to Washpen Falls for one of their EOTC events.

Washpen Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls near Christchurch. The track takes you through a canyon formed by an ancient volcano, thick in native bush and full of bird song, caves, and panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains.

The weather couldn't have been more perfect for our students, and we were fortunate to have plenty of parents and caregivers join us for the day. A big thank you to Mr McInnes for organising this great experience for our students.

Thank you to all those parents and caregivers who braved the cold to attend our End of Term Learning Celebration today.

We hope you all enjoyed the opportunity to come and explore our classrooms and connect with other parents and caregivers.

It was heartwarming to see so many students proudly wearing attire reflecting their cultural heritage, and the incredible array of foods on display truly showcased the diverse cultures within our community.

Your support and participation made this celebration a memorable experience for our students.

We're also thrilled by the overwhelming response to the Young Vinnies Can Drive throughout the week. The generosity of our school community is truly remarkable.

Non-Stop Cricket House Competition.

Over the past few weeks, Mr Hopkins has been leading the charge with our Non-Stop Cricket House Competition during lunchtimes, and it's been a hit!

The games were intense, with some nail-bitingly close moments.

A big congratulations to House Taylor for their impressive victory today! In the final game of the term, they triumphed over the Teachers by just one run!

Laudato Si - Plant a Tree

The Laudato Tree Project stands as Ireland's noteworthy contribution to a remarkable global endeavour.

The ambitious aim of the Great Green Wall project is to plant 7 million trees across 8,000 km of land spanning 11 countries, with the noble mission of rejuvenating the Earth's lungs and enhancing the quality of life on our planet.

Last year, as part of this remarkable initiative, the Christchurch Laudato Si group, collaborated with Trees For Canterbury to procure free trees. These trees were then planted by students, who were encouraged to embrace tree planting as an educational activity, empowering them to take meaningful steps towards safeguarding our planet from the ravages of global warming.

During the week, with the invaluable assistance of the Kaitiaki Taonga - Special Character and a team of dedicated gardeners, a total of 106 new trees were planted at Christ the king, serving as a vital contribution to environmental conservation and doing their part for the Laudato Si - Plant a Tree project.

A big thank you goes to Mr and Mrs McInnes, as well as Michelle Radka, for their invaluable support and guidance in making this project a reality for our students.

ANZAC Day

This year ANZAC Day falls during the schools holidays on Thursday 25th April.

On Monday, Mr McInnes and the Kaitiaki Taonga - Special Character group assembled our ANZAC Crosses near the Prayer Garden for our students to observe.

These white crosses, generously donated by the Fields of Remembrance Trust in 2015, offer a tribute to those who served their country during World War I. Collaborating with numerous sponsors, the Trust facilitated the distribution of over 80,000 white crosses to schools across New Zealand.

The overarching goal of this project is to afford schools the opportunity to establish their own field of white crosses, providing a meaningful avenue for commemoration.

As the school holidays approach, we hope families will take advantage of the opportunity to attend a dawn service near them, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who served.

End of Term Learning Celebration

On Friday 12th April all parents and caregivers are invited to join us for an End of Term Learning Celebration from 11:40am to 1:00pm.

This event offers a unique opportunity for you to explore the classrooms and witness the wonderful work accomplished throughout the term. You'll have the chance to delve into not only our current topic 'Christ the King's Got Heart' but also other enriching learning experiences that have taken place.

As part of our celebration of cultural diversity, we are hosting a Non-Uniform Day to link in with our Can Drive! Students are encouraged to wear clothing that reflects their cultural heritage, including traditional attire or colours significant to their cultural background.

Additionally, we invite students to participate in a Shared (Class) Lunch. They are encouraged to bring a plate of traditional food from their culture or share a beloved family recipe with classmates.

We hope to see you there for this enriching and enjoyable event!

Last night, the Young Vinnies Commissioning Mass took place at the St Mary’s Pro Cathedral led by Bishop Michael Gielen. It provided a wonderful opportunity for students from across the Christchurch Diocese to gather and recognise their roles as members of the 'Young Vinnies' network.

Young Vinnies serve as the youth division of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, offering a platform to empower the younger generation in addressing and understanding various social justice issues prevalent in their communities.

Our Young Vinnies are our Year 8 students, who also form the Kaitiaki Taonga - Service Group. Together with all Year 8 students, they have been actively engaged in remarkable initiatives throughout the school, demonstrating their leadership qualities.

Each of our Kaitiaki Taonga - Service Group received a very special St Vincent de Paul lapel pin to recognise the work they do in our school and wider school community.

Throughout Term 1, several of our enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students have been actively engaged in the VexIQ Robotics Programme facilitated by Wilj Dekkers after school in the School Hall.

Thanks to the support from the Greater Christchurch Schools' Network, we've been able to offer this robotics program to our Year 7 and 8 students at absolutely no cost to the schools! Collaborating with the Christchurch Libraries Learning Team, Wilj has been guiding our students through the intricacies of the VexIQ Robotics System.

Each session has been dedicated to nurturing engineering skills, fostering teamwork, encouraging critical thinking, and honing problem-solving abilities.

Yesterday, our Year 7 and 8 students seized the opportunity to showcase their STEM achievements in a friendly competition alongside peers from other schools in Waimairi-iri. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with one of our teams securing 1st Place.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Wilj for generously dedicating his time to work with our students, and to Mr. Hopkins for orchestrating this enriching event. We're also grateful to the parents and caregivers who supported the students by assisting with transportation on the day.

This week, Monday 8th - Friday 12th April the Kaitiaki Taonga - Service Group will be holding an Easter Can Drive. There has been an increase in the need for food because of the rise in the cost of living.

We would really appreciate it if you could bring in any non-perishable cans of food or other items such as pasta, rice risotto etc.

During Holy Week, Catholics recall the events leading up to Jesus' death. The week includes five days of special significance. The first is Palm Sunday.

Here is a great short, sharp explanation. Holy Week in 3 Minutes ➡️ https://youtu.be/qdrPhxqRP9I

Yesterday all our students took part in the Stations of the Cross. The Stations of the Cross commemorates Jesus' last day on Earth.

For this mini-pilgrimage students acted out the Stations of the Cross in freeze frames. A freeze frame is when a film suddenly freezes on a single, still frame.

The 14 stations are commonly used as a mini-pilgrimage. At each station, the students recalled a specific event from Christ's last day.

Why School is Closed on Easter Tuesday.

For over 60 years, Easter Tuesday has been a designated school holiday for students attending state and state-integrated schools in NZ. By law, schools must remain closed on Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Easter Tuesday.

Typically, the Ministry endeavours to synchronise the start of the April school holidays with Easter, minimising disruptions for families. However, when Easter falls early in the year, such as this year when Good Friday falls on March 29th, the term's end cannot align with the holiday, resulting in a 5-day Easter break during term time.

We understand this may cause disruption for some parents who need to make childcare arrangements for Easter Tuesday, April 2nd. We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause. Please note that this decision is beyond our control.

Thank you for your understanding.

5th Anniversary of Christchurch Mosque Attacks

From the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch

Today marks the 5-years since the tragic Christchurch Mosque attacks. We take a moment to reflect on the lives lost, the survivors, and the community affected by this senseless act of violence. Our hearts continue to ache for all those impacted by this tragedy.

Let us pray:

Loving God, We come before you today with heavy hearts, remembering the lives lost in the Christchurch mosque attacks. We lift up their families and friends, asking for your comfort and healing presence to surround them.

We pray for the survivors, that you may grant them strength and resilience as they continue their journey of healing. May they find solace in your embrace and be filled with hope for the future.

We also ask for your grace upon the community affected by this tragedy. May they find unity, understanding, and peace amidst the pain and grief. Help us all to stand together against hatred and violence, promoting love and compassion in our world.

Amen
