Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 💚
What a fantastic week of learning, sharing and celebrating te reo Māori across our kura!
A huge mihi to everyone who gave things a go, shared their knowledge and encouraged our ākonga throughout the week.
A special thank you to Paola for sharing her harakeke weaving expertise, knowledge and passion with our ākonga.

Over the weekend, three groups of Cobham students proudly represented our kura at the Canterbury Westland Science Fair, held at the University of Canterbury.

Our entrants were:

🌱 Aroush Fatima – Bio Plant Guards
❄️ Franklin Domigan, Lincoln Richards & Kam Sharma – Windscreen De-icer
🍃 Zachary Tiong & Isaac Munday – Leaf Me Alone

All of our students put a huge amount of work into their projects and produced high quality final displays.

A special congratulations to Zachary and Isaac, who were awarded 2nd prize in the Year 7 Technology category, winning $150! 🥈👏

Well done to all of our young scientists and innovators for representing Cobham so brilliantly.

Our students have been on an unforgettable journey to the ice, all without leaving the classroom.

Thanks to the Antarctic Heritage Trust, students stepped inside a hyper-realistic virtual replica of Captain Scott’s 1902 Discovery Hut, exploring hundreds of conserved artefacts, feeding virtual huskies, packing sledges, and even riding a hydrogen balloon. This immersive VR experience brought the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration to life in a way they’ll never forget.

We also welcomed Donna L.Bundy, retired US Army Officer, food safety auditor, and veteran of eight Antarctic deployments. Donna shared incredible insights from her time at the Amundsen-Scott south pole station and McMurdo station, from under ice observation tubes to NASA’s hydroponic greenhouse, the South Pole Telescope, and the 1,601-kilometre South Pole Traverse.

Together, these experiences connected our students with the science, history, and wonder of Antarctica in a hands on, inspiring way.

Our annual Cultural Expo was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and learn about the many cultures that make up our Cobham community.
The day was filled with informative presentations, interactive display boards, delicious food, traditional games, and beautiful cultural attire. It was inspiring to see students proudly sharing their heritage, stories, traditions, and backgrounds with one another, helping us all deepen our understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures within our school.
A huge thank you to the students who participated and showcased their cultures with such pride, and to the parents and whānau who supported the event and contributed the delicious food enjoyed throughout the day.
Events like these remind us of the strength, richness, and sense of belonging that diversity brings to our school community. ❤️

Earlier this term, three Cobham students entered the Welcoming Week Competition, a national initiative that encourages young people to share stories of connection, collaboration, and community while celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand’s rich cultural diversity.

Students were challenged to write and perform either a rap or poem, presented as a one-minute video.

We are incredibly proud to share that Meher M and Ilahah M were shortlisted as regional finalists, while Elle R was name the National winner in the Intermediate category!

This is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the creativity, talent, and confidence of our students. We look forward to recognizing their success at a special celebratory assembly in the coming weeks.

🎻 Cobham Orchestra Shines at the Aurora Festival 🎻

Congratulations to our Cobham Orchestra, who performed at the Aurora Festival on Thursday 27 August and were awarded a Bronze Award.

The Aurora Festival brings together young musicians from across New Zealand, inspiring a love of orchestral, symphonic band, and big band music while fostering a strong sense of community through shared performance experiences.

We are incredibly proud of our talented musicians for their commitment, teamwork, and dedication. A huge thank you to the festival organisers and adjudicators for providing such a valuable opportunity for young performers.

🏅 What an incredible AIMS Games for Cobham Intermediate! 🏅

Fifty-seven Cobham athletes proudly represented our school alongside more than 14,500 competitors from across New Zealand and the wider Pacific, competing with determination, skill, and outstanding sportsmanship across a wide range of sports.

Our students achieved remarkable success, highlighted by a dominant performance in the pool, with gold medal sweeps in the boys’ relay events and individual titles for Declan. Julian delivered a standout victory in golf, while Mattias achieved the extraordinary feat of taking top honours across every single apparatus in gymnastics.

There were also impressive podium finishes in cross country, badminton doubles, and team events, helping to round out an unforgettable week of competition.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes for the way they represented Cobham, both in their performances and in the respect and sportsmanship they showed throughout the games.

A huge thank you to our teachers, coaches, and whānau whose continued support, encouragement, and countless hours on the sidelines made this experience possible.

We recently welcomed a facilitator from BlindNZ to the school to teach our students how to play Goalball, a sport designed for people with low vision.

This session introduces students to a new, inclusive sport and gives them the chance to learn teamwork, communication, and spatial awareness in a completely different way.

We’re incredibly proud to share that four Cobham students have been published in the latest issue of Write On magazine!

A huge achievement that shows their creativity, hard work, and the support of their teachers.

One of our writers, Saanvii Veera Perumal, reflected on the experience, a glimpse into the chaos, joy, and pride behind their published pieces:

“When I heard that my poem was published, it came as quite a surprise, one of the best birthday presents in my opinion. We had two days to write. Two days of chaos in a tiny room, everyone talking over each other and arguing over even the smallest speck of detail… Somehow, that’s what made it so enjoyable. A typical Thursday in term four became some of the most memorable moments of my life. For a 13 year old, satisfaction and pure joy roll into one when you tell someone, with all the pride you can muster, that you’re a published author.”

Congratulations to all four published writers , an incredible milestone and a moment of pride for our school community.
