* NATIONAL CHAMP ALERT * Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
On May 9th, Year 11 learner Eli Wilson travelled up to Auckland to compete in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu New Zealand Nationals, taking away Gold in both Gi and No-Gi for his weight class. It is extremely difficult to get gold in one division, never mind two, so massive well done to Eli! His club Oceanside Jiu Jitsu also took out first place at the event.

Last weekend on Saturday 9th May, the 2026 New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Nationals were held in Auckland at Barfoot & Thompson Stadium ποΈ
78 x Clubs participated from all over New Zealand π³πΏ
This was the 1st time the NZ Jiu Jitsu Nationals included both Gi & No-Gi disciplines on the same day π₯π₯·π»
We took a team of 29 x competitors up to the National championships, which was a significantly smaller team than what we took up to No-Gi Nationals last year, which we won for the 1st time in our clubs history.
Our team did extremely well finishing with a total of 38 x Medals, including 21 x Gold , 7 x Silver &
10 x Bronze π₯π₯π₯
The club finished with a positive win/loss ratio of 73 x Wins & 47 x Losses, which was enough for our club to win #1 Team overall for a 2nd year in a row at the National Championships ππ
Congratulations to both & for making the team podium & bringing super strong teams to the eventβΌοΈ
This result would have never been possible to achieve if it were not for the Team Culture we possess at Oceanside π
And for the South New Brighton Surf Club who gave us our first initial start 7 years ago when it was all just a dream & sponsored our fundraising event this year for the competition π
Thank-You to all of our competitors for representing yourselves & the club at the highest standard both on & off the mats.
The level of respect shown towards the referees, your opponents & their coaches on the day is the most important thing π€
Massive Thank-You to for putting on the competition & providing the platform to grow our sport in Aotearoa πΏ
And Thank you to all of our Kids Parents & Coaches that sacrifice so much of your own personal time to enable our competitors to be able to compete on the biggest Jiu-Jitsu stage in the country π―

What a day π₯
Our No Gi Nationals just delivered the biggest tournament weβve had in 5 years, and the vibe is electric β‘οΈ
To our athletes, coaches, and parents, the level, grit, professionalism, and energy in the venueβ¦ thatβs what builds this circuit. Athletes stepping up, coaches leading calmly under pressure, and parents backing their kids all day, thatβs the backbone of Jiu Jitsu in New Zealand. The parents deserve a medal too π
To our staff and crew, this doesnβt happen without you. Long hours, early starts, problem-solving on the fly, keeping everything running smoothly under pressureβ¦ you set the standard πΌ
Results on the day:
π₯ Oceanside, Overall Academy Champions
π₯ Daredevil, Gracious 2nd Place
π₯ Heads Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 3rd Place (Mila Alves also got fastest submission of the day!)

A HUGE thank you to the New Zealand Mixed Martial Arts Federation π Your support goes directly into grassroots sport here in Aotearoa, helping keep competition accessible for Kiwi athletes.
Tournaments are expensive πΈ Costs range from 15k to 25k, up 45 to 60% over 15 years.
π³πΏ NZ Grappler
β’ Adults $80, Kids $60
β’ Only +$10 increase in 10 years
π¦πΊ Australia
β’ $120 to $180 NZD per division
β’ $300+ for Gi and No Gi
πΊπΈ USA
β’ $230 to $350 NZD per event

Costs have risen, but weβve fought to keep prices down for grassroots athletes. Through funding, sponsorship, and reinvestment, we continue delivering NZβs most prestigious circuit at a fraction of the true cost π
Weβre proud to provide this platform, made possible by our athletes, academies, and partners π€
Thank you NZ for an incredible Nationals. Thank you NZMMAF for your support and Thank you everyone for an epic season so far π
Next up, ADCC. Stay sharp. Step up and give it a go π
