🎤🌟 HAVING FUN AT AVON TOASTMASTERS CHRISTCHURCH! 🌟🎤

What a fantastic evening at Avon Toastmasters in St Albans, Christchurch! Our meeting theme was appropriately “Having Fun!”, and there was certainly plenty of fun, learning, encouragement and achievement throughout the night.

Lyn was our Toastmaster for the evening, guiding us through the programme and keeping the meeting flowing while bringing our Having Fun! theme to life. 👏

📚 A MINI EDUCATIONAL ON TABLE TOPICS

Lyn also delivered a very useful mini educational session on the purpose of Table Topics and impromptu speaking, complete with a practical handout for members.

Table Topics isn’t simply about putting someone on the spot! 😄 It’s designed to help people develop and improve impromptu speaking skills and give participants an opportunity to speak, particularly those who may not have another meeting role.

Lyn shared practical techniques for tackling an unexpected question, including using Present–Past–Future, thinking through the who, what, when, where, why and how, deciding quickly on a point of view, illustrating your point and finishing strongly.

The aim is to turn even a short, unprepared response into a mini speech with a clear idea and strong conclusion.

The educational also explored different ways Table Topics can be presented, including current events, imaginary situations, debates and round-robin activities.

It was a great reminder that Toastmasters isn’t just about practising — we’re continually learning how to become better speakers and communicators too. 🎤📚

🏆 BEST SPEAKER — RACHEL

Congratulations to Rachel, who won Best Speaker with her engaging prepared speech about hiking. 🥾

Rachel demonstrated how our own interests and experiences can become great material for storytelling and public speaking. Fantastic work, Rachel! 👏

🏆 BEST EVALUATOR — ANDREW

This was a particularly special achievement because it was Andrew’s very first time delivering a speech evaluation — and he won Best Evaluator! 🎉

Evaluations help speakers recognise what they’re doing well and identify ways they can continue improving. Andrew stepped outside his comfort zone, took on something new and achieved a fantastic result on his first attempt. 👏

🏆 BEST TABLE TOPICS — ERIKA

Our guest Erika was attending only her second-ever Toastmasters meeting, and she certainly made it memorable!

Erika stepped up for Table Topics, put those impromptu-speaking skills into action and walked away with the Best Table Topics Award. 🎤🏆

What a fantastic achievement on only her second visit!

It’s also a great message for anyone considering visiting Toastmasters: you don’t need experience to come along and have a go.

⏱️📊 A TIMER’S REPORT WITH A DIFFERENCE

Thomas was our Timer and brought a technological twist to the evening with an impressive interactive digital PowerPoint timing report.

Instead of simply reading out everyone’s times, the presentation featured statistics, detailed timing data, interactive elements and fantastic visuals, showing how participants performed against their allocated speaking times.

The precision even went right down to milliseconds! ⏱️💻

It transformed a traditional Toastmasters meeting role into an engaging visual presentation and demonstrated how creativity and technology can be incorporated into public speaking and communication.

👏 Well done, Thomas!

Tonight’s Toastmasters meeting has been cancelled due to weather & cold conditions affecting the Christchurch area. With rain, snow and unsafe travel conditions across the city, we’re putting everyone’s safety first.

We know many of you look forward to our weekly speaking sessions, leadership development, and supportive community environment, but with the current weather. It’s best for everyone to stay home, stay warm, and stay safe.

Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and ongoing support our Toastmasters community is strongest when we look out for each other.

📣 Avon Toastmasters took a trip down memory lane this week! 🎤

Our Toastmaster for the evening, Thomas, led members on a nostalgic journey with the theme “Back in the Day, Christchurch.” From the old underground Bus Exchange and QEII to Science Alive, free shuttle buses and Christmas in the Park, the theme sparked plenty of memories, stories and laughter.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up to take a meeting role and contribute to another enjoyable and supportive evening. Our Word of the Day, presented by Colin, was “Hibernate”, and members certainly didn’t let their vocabulary hibernate!

Congratulations to Ana on completing Level 2 of Presentation Mastery, and to Steve on delivering his Ice Breaker speech, marking the beginning of his Toastmasters journey.
