Active As is transforming engagement at Haeata Community Campus 🎯
Every Wednesday, students take part in a choice-based active recreation block - from gym and turf sports to table tennis and board games.
The approach is helping create more opportunities for participation, connection, and finding different ways to be active. It’s also a great example of what happens when young people are given choice and space to move 💬🏃♀️

Kua hinga te Totara i te wao nui a Tane
The Totora has fallen in the forest of Tane
We mourn the loss of three titans of te Māori.
Whatarangi a Professor in Accounting. Hirini in Anthropology. Tamati a degree in Linguistics. All 3 studied overseas. All experienced racism and indifference and ignorance. But what work they undertook, most of it for love and free, the time they spent away from whanau, the goals they achieved for us all. They did so much, with very little.
A small but exemplary tale: Whata came back from the US with a huge dream, to revive his people of Ngati Raukawa in the south, including Otaki. So like a good numbers guy, he starts counting. He does a type of tribal census. How many in the tribal region have te reo. How many are in key professions? He found that there was no one 5 y or younger who spoke Maori. Fast track to 2018, years after planting the seeds of Whakatupuranga Rua Mano, the tribal regeneration strategy, and having established a tribal university specialising in Reo and Tikanga, the NZ Census finds that 50% of all Māori in Otaki speak Māori!
Thank you all for your service, passion and commitment.
He mahi tonu kei te toe!
Still work to do.
