Avonside Girls' High School Welcome to Avonside Girls’ High School | Te Kura Kōhine o Ōtākaro. Our school has a long and proud history in our city.

Established over 90 years ago, our school has developed to meet the needs of students throughout the years, and offers innovative future-focused curriculum, high academic standards and a broad range of co-curricular activities that enrich school life for students. Our highly qualified and experienced staff encourage girls to excel in a positive and focused learning environment. Following the devastation of the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, Avonside Girls’ High School has been rebuilt on a new co-located site, sharing the Orua Paeroa campus with partner school, Shirley Boys’ High School, with each school retaining its unique culture and identity and teaching spaces but sharing some key facilities. Just one year into operation, the schools’ facilities are the envy of many and staff and students alike enjoy the opportunities the new campus offers. Over the last few months, our Yr9-10 Adventure Race squad members have been preparing for the Regional Get2Go Challenge 2026 with a series of practice events. Honing skills like navigation, problem solving and water skills, the squad got to know each other, including their Shirley Boys High School team mates, which set them up for an awesome event day 🏃‍♀️🛶

Organised by Hillary Outdoor across NZ, Get2Go Challenge is a full day of outdoor adventure activities for teams of 8 students. For our region, the event is based at The Groynes and Lake Rua in Roto Kohatu Reserve. It is a day of fun outdoor challenges that prepare teams for an adventure race environment and, for those teams that want it that way, the event is also a race!

On Wednesday 9 September, the team met at Lake Rua for water activities (paddling SUP’s and kayaks) and problem solving. Then in the afternoon they travelled to The Groynes mountain biking and orienteering. Kua pai te mahi to all team members, it was a fantastic day with some great team work, great fun and amazing results.

For the first time, we are incredibly excited to have 2 students represent Avonside Girls' High School at the NZQA Ringa Toi exhibition.

A huge congratulations to Te Paea Lee and Eliza Knight who each had a piece accepted into this national exhibition held at Pataka in Porirua, Wellington. Te Paea and Eliza flew up to partake in workshops run by the guest artist judges and attend the opening ceremony and exhibition opening. What an amazing opportunity, ka pai Te Paea and Eliza!

Excitement is building for our teams competing in the World Scholar's Cup 2026 Christchurch Global... 🦙✨

Y9 Student, Freelance Borland wins Robotics Scrimmage leaving 10 other school teams in her wake! 🤖

Throughout 2026, Freelance has been working on creating a Robot for the 2026/7 Vex Robotics Championship. This is an international competition and Freelance has already locked in her place at the Nationals in Auckland, February 2027.

Despite being a Year 9, Freelance has learned to design, build and programme her robot. Soft Skills (collaboration and communication) enable alliances to form quickly and neutralise their opponents. Freelance has also learned to drive her robot well; avoiding entanglement, pushing back against other robots and switching up the colour bar effectively (see the video below).

On Sunday the 13th of September, Freelance worked her way through the field of 10 other robots created by much more experienced teams. Burnside, Hillmorton, St Andrews, Christchurch Boys’ all succumbed and were left in her wake. She, and her alliance partner from St Andrews (also a Y9 team) then took out the scrimmage that was livestreamed internationally. Freelance is one of a group of young people who get to work with Meccano style robots, every week day and Wednesday after school in the Maths Department. AGHS owns three robot kits for teams to build; these are controlled by a regular handset and come with a programmable brain. Aila Thomsen and Amanda Elcock continue to work on their own robots and support Freelance by offering up competition and conversation! If you are interested in joining our Robotics Club, feel free to email [email protected] or just come along to the Field end of the Maths Department after school on a Wednesday. If there are any businesses willing to support, please also use the above email address to discuss terms. Happy to promote your business, if you want to promote young people doing STEM!
