❤️🎖️Anzac Day falls during our term break this year but when you're next on City campus you may want to stop by The Memorial Garden on our North Green. Installed in 2017 to honour of the memory of past students and staff members who gave their lives in the service of their country, the work was created by Art & Design students, with Ara graduate and artist Dallas Matoe contributing the designs. Find out more through the wonderful new Ngā Taonga o Māori app.

👷🛠️🏆ANOTHER outstanding result for our Ara Managed Carpentry Apprentices with 3rd year Nico Portland taking out the Canterbury regional title at the 2024 New Zealand Certified Builders Association Apprentice Challenge sponsored by ITM!! Nico worked against the clock and the craftmanship of 12 other skilled competitors to complete a well-finished BBQ table at the recent event. “Nico’s employed by the excellent team at bespoke building company Craft Limited and it’s an absolute pleasure to work together to bring young apprentices like him on,” tutor Ron Bedyn said after watching the event unfold. “He’s certainly honing his skills and brought his methodical approach, accuracy and attention to detail to the competition.”
The grand final is at the NZCB national conference in June with a $50,000 prize pack up for grabs. Ron Bedyn said Ara carpentry apprentices had taken out overall top honours twice in the last three years and Nico’s natural ability and commitment could see him go the distance.

Mark your calendar now!! ‘Night to Morning’ is the stirring final thesis work of Ara Institute of Canterbury Master of Creative Practice ākonga Tahlia King.
An art project seeking to explore the emotional impact of the cost of living crisis in Christchurch, King uses photography to capture nocturnal scenes in supermarket carparks and late-night petrol stations where the insomniac effects of poverty are most evident. Using the photographs for reference she then produces works that combine drawing with mixed media to extract the emotional core from ‘everyday’ locations.
Art Hole Gallery, 336 St Asaph Street, Christchurch. 5 days only. Don't miss it!
Gallery Hours: Tues - Fri : 11 am - 3 pm and Sat : 10 am - 3 pm (Opening event Tuesday 27 February 5.30-7.30pm)
