Congratulations to the MGMT308 Advanced Human Resource Management students for their outstanding work this year! In collaboration with Prolorus Solutions and guided by Dr Anna Earl and Prolorus founder and CEO Simon Lind, students were given opportunities to work directly with organisations – small, large, multinational, private, public and non-for-profit – to develop recruitment strategies.

Recently, Prudence Flanagan, Brooke Leyland, Avidail Richardson, and Claudia Smidt collaborated with Enatel, presenting a cutting-edge Recruitment Strategy to the Executive Leadership Team. The team scrutinised Enatel’s culture, values, practices and policies to develop an innovative solution to retain staff in the manufacturing sector through innovative recruitment practices.

Another stellar team - Mackenzie Annett, Tayla Devon, Elise Elliott, Samuel Garters, and Ashlyn Newton - transformed MedRecruit's approach with a unique "Request to Recruit" strategy, which pushes managers to critically evaluate the necessity of recruitment, its financial feasibility, and the organisation’s training readiness.

A big thanks to our partners, including McDonalds Linwood, Odyssey House, ZURU, Ashburton District Council, Enatel, Lane Neave, MedRecruit, and Timaru District Council, for providing invaluable opportunities.

This week we celebrated the University's 150th Anniversary at our UC MBA Thought Leadership Series event. We heard from the remarkable Carl Davidson (Research First) and Associate Professor Sarah Wright on the issue of loneliness in individuals and leaders and the steps we can take to address it.

Their words were sobering and inspiring - did you know a Harvard study found the long-term effects of chronic loneliness can have the same impact on physical health as smoking 15 ci******es a day?

Watch the event recording on YouTube now: https://youtu.be/IGbnulZXCrw to learn more and be empowered to make a difference.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting Georgina Torrington, the Director of Sales and Marketing from Brook Serene Boutique Hotels. She spoke to our MKTG241 Hospitality Marketing and Management students, providing a strong foundation for the students to come up with their own sustainability initiatives to be adopted by their hotel, The George.

We're thrilled to be part of a project that demonstrates such inspiring learning opportunities for our students. They are now hard at work on their assessments, creating solutions to help lead the tourism and hospitality industry into more sustainable pathways.

We can't wait to see what our students come up with!

Keen to explore the wonders of nature, students of MKTG317 Sustainable Tourism Enterprises and Destinations embarked on an exciting field trip to the Waitaki Whitestone Unesco Global Geopark, Aotearoa New Zealand's first and only UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark.

During the 10-11 September journey, students were given the opportunity to visit various geosites and gain insights into their potential for sustainable tourism development. They were also privileged to learn about the geosites' aesthetic, scientific, and cultural significance from the Geopark's educator, Sasha Morriss.

The knowledge they gained on the visit will be put to good use as the students develop and propose tourism activities that can be potentially offered by the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, in line with delivering regenerative and sustainable outcomes within the Waitaki District.

This incredible learning experience was made possible by the UC Business School Department of Management, Marketing and Tourism in collaboration with the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, and was led by course coordinator Dr Richard Aquino and co-facilitated by Prof Girish Prayag.

What an incredible opportunity for these students to learn from the experts and to gain an appreciation for the earth's natural wonders and the importance of sustainability!

Associate Professor Herb de Vries briefly stepped out of sabbatical recently to join Outreach Coordinator Catherine Broome at Lincoln High School to take part in the final pitching and judging of the Junior YES Competition (Young Enterprise Scheme).

The focus of the competition was to foster the entrepreneurial spirit of young people and give them an opportunity to develop their business skills alongside their Business Studies curriculum.

Sharing our knowledge with the community is something we value at the UC Business School and it was great to see Herb and Catherine contributing to such a worthwhile cause. Kudos to them for taking the time to be a part of something that will help shape the future of our youth.
