Last night, three of our ākonga represented our kura at the New Zealand Schools' Japanese Trivia Championships.
Our Japanese teacher, Miss Hansen, accompanied Liam Fraser, Makaela Mathewson & Ashley Mackie to the Canterbury region event at Hornby High School to complete against junior Japanese learners from other schools in the region. The Mairehau team was in first place for 3 out of 5 of the rounds, and drew for first in the last round. They ended up second place overall after an especially difficult tie breaker question!
Second place is a tremendous effort and we are very proud!! 👏

This term, Mr Cairns put together a Mairehau High School team to join Toi Kupu Toi Rakatahi Toi Korero's Ōtautahi Youth Poetry Slam. Six lovely, creative, and passionate students from Years 10-12 formed a group and have been meeting every Tuesday lunch time with Christchurch poet Lee Fraser (https://leefraserpoetry.com) to refine their skills in poetry. We were invited to a workshop at the new Court Theatre yesterday, where we hung out with other high schools to practice, write, and listen. Next up for our talented young group are further workshops, leading up to the competition in September!

Last Wednesday night, Miss Marshall was proud to accompany four of our wonderful students to the 2026 Ethnic Youth Awards at Tūranga Library. This is a Ministry of Education initiative that supports celebrating our diverse and talented young people in Ōtautahi.
Hegby, Kumba, Hyemi and Emma were wonderful representatives of their countries of origin and for Mairehau High School. It was a proud moment for their parents and staff alike!

Last Friday, our MHS choir had the privilege of performing at the Christchurch Town Hall, as part of the Big Sing choir competition. The students performed well and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
For the size of our kura, our choir is very large, reflecting not only the passion that many of our students share for music, but also the value we place on inclusivity as a school. We were very proud of them and their performance!
