Deadline fast approaching! Put your work forward for "Momentum '26" by the end of Wednesday 5th August 2026.

Open call for Canterbury artists to be part of Eastside Gallery's top show for the year.

"Momentum" is for artists who are actively committed to developing their art practice and who have substantial, or substantive, exhibition experience in curated shows. Like all of the shows in our “artist development” series ("First Steps" - "Stride by Stride" - "Momentum") it is a showcase of recent work in any style, theme and medium.

Register by: 5 August 2026
Exhibition dates: 8 September - 3 October 2026

Open Wed-Thu: 11am-5pm | Fri-Sat: 10am-5pm

We offer 11 weekly classes & activities, run exhibitions and events in Eastside and the Mini and hire our spaces for arts activities and events evenings and weekends.

We are committed to artist development through our exhibition programme and community development via participation in our creative spaces.

In 2026 we have 8 open call shows for local artists. In the last financial year we exhibited the work of 384 artists.

Exciting news about the future of the Art Metro!

As many of you know the Art Metro has been for sale. We are delighted to share that the sale has been successfully concluded. The new owners will take over starting Monday, 17th August.

Throughout this process, we have had two firm priorities: ensuring staff remain secure in their employment and that the Art Metro continues to be a place where students feel welcomed and supported as artists. We are confident that the new owners, Matt and Bex Nolan, are the right people to achieve these goals.

Thank you for being a part of our time at the Art Metro over the last 14 years. We have enjoyed seeing people develop their art skills and the friendships we have made along the way.

The Art Metro has a bright future ahead!

Introducing Tammy Wells - "This exhibition is entitled 'Dusk at Ngakuta' - a beloved Marlborough Sounds holiday spot for our family. Our wee granddaughter is the 5th generation of family to enjoy Ngakuta.

I love colour - subtle and soothing as well as flashes of vibrant, bold colour. I love texture and brush strokes in my painting."

You can view Tammy's work at Art Metro - 465 Papanui Road from 9.30-3.30 Monday - Thursday, or by appointment.
