Last week, our groups got crafty using supplies they’ve collected from various locations throughout the term. Everyone made a crafted companion, which they took to Cracroft Reserve, where they then built natural shelters in the bush. Look out for next week, when we’ll be making shelters big enough for the whole group!

Last week our groups tested their map and compass skills within Spencer Park's pine forest. They navigated their way around the orienteering course within the forest, but with a twist! They learned how to take and follow compass bearings, so we could go off track to find the controls. 🗺️🧭

Last week we headed to Kaituna Bush Reserve to learn about trees and even picked some leaves to make some Kawakawa tea. Just like we did with our mushrooms hunting, we made use of all our resources to identify and record the trees and plants we found on our map of the area. After learning about the trees and plants we enjoyed a hot brew all together in nature! 🍃

🍄🔍 It’s been all about mushroom identification at Learn Active lately. Our groups have enjoyed a trip to Kowai Bush, just past Springfield, exploring a beautiful native bush reserve in search of fungi. Using an ID app, books, and other resources, we’ve identified puffballs, turkey tail, lion’s mane, and more (even tasting birch sap along the way).

Check out the new 'What's On Disability' feature on the Christchurch City Council website.
This is a space you can explore a range of events, programmes, and activities in Ōtautahi Christchurch that are specifically created for people with disabilities. How cool!

One of Christchurch’s favourite events webpages is making it easier to find out what disability events are happening in the city. 😎🕺💃🏻
What’s On Christchurch will now have a special spot for disability events.

X marks the spot! Last week, we kicked off our bush term map learning with the first of three sessions, focusing on map features: how to identify and record them within Prebbleton Nature Park. After learning, we explored the park to map features on a blank map, which we then used to place bug markers for the other half of the group to locate using the maps we made. 📍🐞🦋

Rocks, rock! Last we visited some beautiful locations, Kaituna Quarry and Birdlings Flat, to learn all about toka/rocks and how they fit within te taiao/the natural world. Our groups finished their learning by collecting some interesting rocks and we've added them to their term treasure boxes.

Bird was the word last week! Our groups went to both Brooklands Lagoon and Te Ihutai/Avon-Heathcote estuary for some wetland bird watching. They learned about the birds they saw, as well as the importance of the estuaries that these birds call home.
Last year, our bush term was themed around the one and only David Attenborough and today it's his 100th birthday!! Big happy birthday to this nature legend 🥳🐦
