Learn Active The programmes are catered around the students abilities and interests with a low ability and high ability group available.

Established in 2013, Learn Active is a registered charity dedicated to providing outdoor education programmes that empower individuals with intellectual disabilities through inclusive, hands-on learning experiences. Learn Active is running 'Active Discoveries' Programmes that cater for 18-35 year olds with intellectual Disabilities that want to get active and meet new friends. Learn Active's Founder, Director and main instructor is Karla Roberts who has been working in outdoor education for 8+ years with over 2 years in special education as Ferndale School's Outdoor Teacher. Karla has the passion, skills and patience for this role including 2 Diplomas in Outdoor Recreation, New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association awards Bush 1 and Rock 1, Raft Guide Certificate and Pre Hospital Emergency Care First Aid. Possible activities offered throughout the year could include:
Mountain Biking, Hiking, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Orienteering, Bush Skills

Programmes are run one day per week in conjunction with the school term. These days are payable in respite care days (eg 8 respite days per 8 day programme)

Learn Active is happy to help where possible with Fundraising, applications for respite days, grants etc to help get more students involved.

After two weather cancellations, we were finally able to sneak in a ski day this term; It was the perfect winter wonderland, with fresh snow dropping on us and mild temperatures. This was the first time some of our students had experienced skiing/retireti hukarere alongside being in the snow.

Lots of snowballs were thrown, cookies eaten, skiing, and beautiful mountain views taken in.

✨Te wiki o Te Reo Māori ✨

Last week, our indoor piki toka/rock climbing sessions began, with the Ridgeline group the first to harness up and piki/climb the walls at the scout den. The rest of the groups finished up their bouldering or playground movement sessions.

We will finish the term with indoor piki toka/rock climbing for the remaining groups, putting everything we’ve learned into practice: climbing with focus, the herd's support, and sure footing. Ka pai everyone🐐🧗

Last week was our break week for some groups and the start of bouldering for others. For those who had their break week, we explored the playground with different movement challenges, relating it back to this terms theme and of course the mountain goat. We can't wait for all our group's upcoming bouldering sessions and some more climbing! 🧗
