Glaciers are a taonga and vital to both the health of people and te taiao, the natural environment. Our spectacular glaciers nourish delicate ecosystems, feed major hydroelectric power schemes, attract tourists, and act as highly sensitive indicators of climate change.

This field trip includes a virtual flight with scientists along the length of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, the Southern Alps to complete the end of summer snowline survey.

This is an aerial survey run by Earth Sciences New Zealand. It has been been carried out every year for nearly 50 years. We explore the importance of glaciers, discover how they shape our landscape and how they are responding to our changing climate.

Did you know that the glaciers of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, the Southern Alps, have lost around 30% of their ice volume over the last 40 years?

During this field trip, you will join scientists on a flight along the length of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana to complete the end of summer snowline survey.
