The whenua has been on the move in recent weeks with landslides in Awakino. Our new LEARNZ field trip will help ākonga to be 'landslide ready,' and to learn about the science and history of landslides.

Who is this new LEARNZ field trip for?

This field trip is ideal for science and social studies classes in years 6-10, especially those with a focus on geography.

IT's an immersive educational experience aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum. It aims to help to facilitate research and education, and contribute to the sharing of information, knowledge and expertise on natural hazard risks, impacts and resilience. Students can learn about what it means to be ready for landslides and the possible impacts on their own communities.

LEARNZ has evolved over two decades and is now a comprehensive virtual field trip programme for educators and learners.

It began in 1995 as an Antarctic-focused education programme, harnessing the great stories that came from New Zealand Antarctic science research.

LEARNZ started as an acronym: Linking Education and Antarctic Research in New Zealand. But from 1995 we developed the concept of a virtual field trip – taking students in the early days on learning adventures to the dry valleys, the Antarctic coast, and the Ross Sea in the depths of an Antarctic winter onboard a research icebreaker.

The focal person in each expedition is the LEARNZ Teacher: alongside ākonga they meet experts and researchers in their workplace or in the field, and interpret their visits from a science, social studies, or technology curricula point of view.

Take your classroom on an adventure, without leaving school! 🌏

This August, the free LEARNZ On Unstable Ground virtual field trip takes Years 5–10 students to Central Otago to explore the science of landslides alongside scientists and engineers.

“LEARNZ gives students the chance to connect what they're learning in the classroom with the real world,” says NHC Public Education Manager Hamish Armstrong.

Running 17–20 August, the programme includes live web conferences, videos and curriculum-aligned resources—all free for schools across Aotearoa.

It's not too late to enrol in a regional workshop for Te Poipoi Kaiako. Workshops are for Provisional teachers and Pia to develop their professional practice; with support for their Tiwhikete Whakaakoranga Tūturu | Full Practising Certificate.

Overseas Trained Teachers will develop their understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand and our education context.

Mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko develop their mentoring practice.

We seek experienced kaiako with a special interest in any Wāhanga Ako (TMoA) or Learning Area (NZC), from Māori medium and English medium schools.
