The end of year busy-ness is in full flight and I was well amongst it at the craft show (Encraftment) on the weekend. I am not one for hoards of people jossling around stalls but it was well worth the effort to see kiwis exhibiting their amazing skills. From clarinet lamps to 'pirate kiwis' there was something for everyone. ... And yes I left with a bag of goodies.

The northern hemisphere has just started the school year and I got the privilege of travelling to Tianjin Haileybury Elite School just south of Beijing to work with their teachers before the students arrived.
3 days and 4 workshops later and we had all the teachers trained and a support system in place with the use of trained coaches and the online video system.
Such a wonderful experience with a fantastic group of teachers. I look forward to hearing about their progress as their year develops.

How about a focus on Comprehension Instruction in Schools?

Structured Literacy seems to be sucking all the oxygen out of reading PD these days!

Don't get me wrong. I am an avid advocate for phonic instruction in the junior school and this extends to having systems in place to support students in the upper school who have slipped through the net and still have decoding deficits.

BUT I also think it is time to implement a similarly rigorous approach to the systematic, explicit teaching of comprehension if we are truly going to rectify our falling literacy standards.
