National Volunteers Week 2026
As it's National Volunteers Week, we would like to thank our incredibly hard working committee.
A big thank you to our committee for their dedication and commitment to the Canterbury Caledonian Highland Dancing Section. The committee makes sure our Saturday classes and competitions are smoothly.
Also to our teachers who teach at our Saturday classes, these classes wouldn't be possible with out you all.
Thank you.

I would like to pay a special tribute to Mrs Elesby Ferguson who passed away on Sunday 19th April. Elesby was a Canterbury Caledonian Society and Highland Dancing Life member.
Elesby was not a dancer herself but became involved in the Caledonian Society when her youngest daughter Susan started dancing.
When the directors of the Society officially formed a committee to run the Highland Dancing section in 1983, she became the first Secretary, a position she held for 20 years.
She worked tirelessly in the kitchen, provided accommodation for judges, made up our raffle prizes and sewed hundreds of beautiful rosettes for prizes at our competitions. Not only hours of service but I’m sure her bank account suffered from her generosity as well.
She would often laugh and say she knew nothing about the dancing. However, her sharp mind kept us on track with our history as well as where and how the rules of our section came about.
When she was no longer able to make our meetings due to ill health, she was adamant that she still receives the meeting minutes and continued to make our precious rosettes. Even though she was extremely unwell last week she still wanted to know who was judging and what the entries were like for our competitions on Saturday.
Not one for the limelight, Elesby was a truly loyal, dedicated, passionate and hard working committee member. We will miss her dearly. May she rest in peace.
