Today is Oscar’s birthday! Here are some fun facts about our favorite grouch.
🟢 Oscar wasn’t always green.
When Sesame Street debuted in 1969, Oscar was orange. The show later explained that he turned green after a vacation in a swamp.
🟢 Many parents thought Oscar was “too mean.”
Over the years, Sesame Street received criticism from some parents who worried Oscar’s grumpy attitude would encourage bad behavior. The creators intentionally kept him because they wanted children to understand that not everyone is happy all the time—and that’s okay.
🟢 Oscar taught an important lesson about differences.
The show’s creators have said Oscar was designed to help children learn to accept people with different personalities, even if they aren’t cheerful or easygoing.
🟢 His trash can is basically magic.
Inside Oscar’s trash can are supposedly entire rooms, furniture, pets, and even an elephant named Fluffy.
🟢 Oscar once ran for president.
In a Sesame Street storyline, Oscar launched a presidential campaign with the slogan “Vote for Me, I’ll Make Things Worse.”
🟢 He’s surprisingly kind when nobody is looking.
Many episodes show Oscar secretly helping his friends and then pretending he didn’t care.
🟢 He has one of the longest-running friendships on TV.
Despite constantly complaining about everyone, Oscar has been friends with Big Bird, Gordon, Maria, and the rest of Sesame Street for more than 50 years.
