Let's talk about overlearning. What is it? What isn't it?
Overlearning is having ongoing opportunities to practise and become proficient at a task. It is different from rote learning or doing the same activity repeatedly. Once a student has begun to grasp and understand a concept, we practise using games, activities and multisensory methods to reinforce the spelling pattern, sounds, or whatever is being taught. Overlapping with new learning, revisiting and reviewing concepts is vital. SLD tuition is a challenging fix. It takes time for students to gain rapport with a tutor. Students also need time to gain confidence and feel they can progress. Below is a link to an excellent read regarding teaching approaches, including overlearning.

Lets talk about time travel. During the 20+ years I have been tutoring students, almost all of them have been challenged by time. I don't just mean learning to read an analogue or digital time piece. For those who need it, each lesson is started with the day, date, month, year and season. Some light hearted discussion is always generated from the day, or year or month, season that many students think they are in compared to the reality! Vocabulary, sequence, prior knowledge and experience is required.. Sequence and spatial difficulties contribute to this lack of self awareness and sense of time and space that the world is governed by. Many of our SLD students are so busy coping with being present and processing information, that time is to abstract and not a priority. I have observed improvements in students well being and self esteem from growing in their understanding of time, it helps them become more grounded in self and their relationship to everything else in the world. Learning about the weather, seasons, timetables, how to write and spell the date in different ways, family and world holidays and events and seasons. I believe it is important for students to know this information. It improves sense of time, space relationship and connections to the world in relation to themselves.

I currently have some spaces available during the day, Monday to Friday, if you are seeking tutoring for your child. Most of these times are between 9-12pm. I currently rent a room to tutor from the Seabrook Mckenzie Centre in Richmond Christchurch.
I have 20+ years of experience tutoring students with learning disabilities. My passion is reading and teaching children to read. I will tutor your child with or without an assessment. I focus on underpinnings that affect the learning of students, as well as literacy. I will provide a Literacy and Math focus for years 1-6 if this is area also needs support.
I look forward to supporting your child and working with your whānau.
