Please note: Due to increasing demand, this registration is an expression of interest only. It is essential that participants are fully committed to attending the entire program from the 7th to the 10th of April, ensuring utmost consideration is shown towards our Pou Reo, who work hard to prepare lessons, and our rikawera, who would have already made arrangements for kai.
This kura reo is a full immersion environment, catering to individuals with intermediate to advanced proficiency in te reo Māori. All participants are expected to communicate exclusively in te reo Māori throughout the wānaka. We are unable to accommodate tamariki at this kura reo.

165 years ago this week, the battle at Waerenga-a-Hika changed the trajectory of Tūranga (Gisborne) Māori. Part of the wider New Zealand Wars, it marked the moment the Crown turned its attention to Tūranga — not because our iwi sought conflict, but because Māori leadership here remained strong, united, and self-determined.

Waerenga-a-Hika stands among Aotearoa’s defining battles — a clash shaped by Crown aggression, by Māori drawn into conflict against each other, and by the painful reality of whānau divided.

As we look back 165 years, what lessons can Tūranga take from one of its hardest moments so the community no longer carries the battle scars of Waerenga-a-Hika?
