Carpentry at Playcentre! Did you know you can join in no matter what age you are? The babies were exploring different sized pieces of wood, toddlers were sorting and learning to use hammers in cardboard and the 4 year olds had measuring tapes and were talking about numbers.

Water play, what a wonderful way to celebrate the first day of Spring!
We explored the way water flows and moves and asked lots of questions... What happens if we add sand to it? Can we add green? What happens if I use the hose? Can I tip the water on my friend?!?

Messy Play is always on offer at LTPC!
Today the tamariki were inspired to turn a tray of gloop into a donut shop! With the addition of coloured salt for sprinkles and flour and food colouring for icing - the play was full of rich learning, discussion and as always, negotiation!
For children, messy play is liberating, fun and fully absorbing. Naturally curious, children show high levels of concentration and engagement as they explore with their senses. From a child’s perspective, messy play is magical – full of excitement and pure joy.
Please join us during our Messy Play Week and explore the magic of Playcentre
A treasure box, two telescopes and a pirate ship - Landsdowne Terrace Playcentre - July 2023
This term our goal is - Communication | Mana Reo | Children are strong and effective communicators.
What incredible communication you practiced at the craft table with things from Creative Junk!
One of your friends was at the craft table so you both went over to join in. This was tricky though because some things like the silver beads and gold bauble shr didn't want to share, she said she had them first!
You all tried different ways to get what you needed- there was pulling and snatching, crying and yelling ...but after a short time you decided to cut every resource into 2 pieces, one to keep and one to share!
After you had established this you worked together brilliantly "do you want this piece?" you kept asking each other! I thought 2 glue guns between the 3 of you was going to be tricky but you communicated kindly, asking and waiting for turns with no troubles at all!
The new craft items from Creative Junk really challenged you to negotiate. What other treasures can we put out for you to explore?
Creative Junk - Early Childhood Resource Centre
Thursday is explorer day at Landsdowne Terrace Playcentre. We meet somewhere in the community to explore and connect. This week we went to clip and climb. What amazing smiles when the tamariki persevered and achieved their own successes!
Landsdowne Terrace Playcentre’s distinctive climbing frame has apparently been stolen from Cashmere road (temporary site prior to repaint.) Someone may have bought this stolen property in good faith. Please share/contact the police if you know anything.

Playcentre Aotearoa announced in August that ‘Space at Playcentre’ infant programmes have been launched in Canterbury especially for whānau with babies aged 0-6 months.
Bookings are now open for Term 1 2023! Spread the word amongst your family networks. In 2021, Playcentre Aotearoa reported that Space and Babies Can Play sessions combined saw an increase of 21% uptake compared to the previous year. Offering 'Space at Playcentre' in Canterbury responds to that demand; there will be over 23 new infant programmes offered next year. Very exciting times for young families in Canterbury!

So many adventures exploring our special wai resource and enjoying spring temperatures outdoors.
Utilising a water butt means that the water flow is controlled and the story of using wai responsibly can also be told.
Here are some photos of our trip to the Curators house to learn about worms and how to create compost. It was a really educational trip and we made our own worm enclosures to take home and release into our own gardens!
Tahi rua toru whā here we go jumping over obstacles in a row (aka ‘Parkour’)
Today we enjoyed smashing ice which had some lovely flowers and colours added to it.
Learning how to keep ourselves and others safe with the ‘circle of safety’ around us while using hammers was a key focus while enjoying this amazing sensory learning experience.
We’ve been exploring light and colour at playcentre and today we made artworks that were inspired by this image (on our kaiako’s cellphones - see link below), and ended up with all sorts of amazing additions including feathers, pipe cleaners, rulers and even scissors!
We love seeing the creativity of our tamariki as they explore the world!
