The 4 month progression

We’ve all heard of it. The changes to our little one’s sleep and settling can hit most like a tonne of bricks

CATNAPS
2 HOURLY WAKES OVERNIGHT
UNABLE TO SELF SETTLE
CANNOT LINK SLEEP CYCLES
RELIANT ON YOU TO DO THE PUTTING TO SLEEP PART

You name it - the 4m progression usually brings it.

The good news? This age is the PERFECT time to shape our little ones sleep.

Long naps, predictable days, restorative stretches overnight - here we gooooo!

It’s not your job to put your baby to sleep — honestly, it’s not! 💤👶

Yes, they might need your help. Yes, they need your love and reassurance.

But the actual moment they close those little eyes and drift off? That part is all them. ✨

It’s such a mindset shift — and one I coach families through all the time.

Instead of rushing in to “do” the settling, pause.
Wait. Give your little one a chance to try first.

That’s where the magic happens. 🌙🤍

Stop. Listen. Then respond.

When we approach sleep thinking we have to make it happen, it piles on so much pressure. And when things don’t go perfectly — the nap’s short, the wake-ups are frequent, or the wheels come off completely — we end up feeling anxious, guilty, or like we’ve failed. (You haven’t!)

Your job isn’t to make them sleep. It’s to support them — whether that’s with a cuddle, a pat, a feed, a song, or simply a moment of space. You’re doing exactly what they need. 💛

Take the pressure off, Mama — you’re doing amazing. ❤️

Sleep is such a big topic in parenthood.

It’s one of those things we all so desperately need and sometimes it can be so hard to get (no matter how hard or how old our little ones are).

But guess what? Your value as a Mum does not depend on how much your baby sleeps. Nothing you do today or tonight will negatively impact your little ones sleep forever.

If your day has looked like short naps and rough night...IT IS OKAY!

Remember that there is only one of you - and you, your little ones and family deserve the best version of you. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Ensure you are;

Having you time
Not worrying about a messy house
Asking for (and accepting) help
Prioritising yourself
Giving yourself a break

Sleep deprivation is a real thing and can feel overwhelming - because it is hard! Just know you are not alone.

Whatever it is you want to change so that your household is feeling more rested and thriving, Little Dreamers can help you achieve those goals.

Bedtime is the time when parents suddenly remember 473 urgent tasks… and kids suddenly remember they’re starving, parched, and need to discuss the meaning of life 😅

If you know, you know. 👀 Bedtime can feel less like a wind-down and more like a full-scale negotiation — one more drink of water, one more story, one more “But Muuuuum…” 🙈

But here’s the truth: our little ones aren’t being difficult on purpose — bedtime is a big transition, and kids often use it as a chance to connect, stall, or test boundaries.

💡 A simple tip: Try building in “connection time” before bed. A few extra minutes of undivided attention (chatting, cuddling, or reading together) can reduce the last-minute requests and help them settle more smoothly.

✨ THERE ARE NO BAD HABITS ✨

There are no “bad habits” when it comes to helping your little one sleep — only things that may no longer be working for your family. 💛

So often, parents come to us worried or embarrassed because they’ve been told rocking, feeding, holding, or patting their baby to sleep is a “bad habit.” But here’s the truth: those are not bad habits — they are beautiful, nurturing ways you’ve shown love and comfort to your baby. 🤍

If something is working for your family, there is absolutely no reason to change it. You are responding to your child’s needs, and that is never a negative thing. Babies and toddlers thrive on connection, and how you choose to settle your little one is entirely up to you.

Of course, sometimes a method that once worked stops being sustainable — maybe your baby has grown, your circumstances have shifted, or your whole household is exhausted. That’s not a sign you’ve created “bad habits,” it’s just a signal that it might be time to make some gentle adjustments.

And the good news? With the right support, your child can learn to fall asleep in new ways that work better for everyone. 🌙

💡 Remember:
✔️ There are no “bad habits”
✔️ You know your baby best
✔️ What matters is finding what works for YOUR family

Be kind to yourself, trust your instincts, and know that you are doing an incredible job. 💕

Tell is — what’s one “bad habit” you’ve been told you had, but you actually loved doing with your little one? We would love to hear your stories in the comments 👇

Rolling is a developmentally appropriate skill for little one’s to practise, usually between 4-6months of age.

Safe sleeping guidelines recommend placing your baby wholly on their back for all sleeps, right up to 12 months of age. Where they go to from there is totally up to them!

So what happens if your baby rolls on their tummy during sleep time?

🔹 Slowly roll them back onto their back and support them with some reassuring chest pats/firm hand to comfort them
🔹 If they roll again repeat the above and offer verbal support too.
🔹If they continue to roll on to their tummy you could offer to support them in that position.

What should you do once they show signs of rolling?

🔸It’s really important that once your baby shows signs of rolling (getting up on their side or rolling 1 way) that we transition them from a swaddle to an arms our sleeping bag/sack. 🔸Intermittent rolling can very quickly become frequent and we need to ensure that your baby has a safe sleep space and that they can prop themselves up and turn their head to the side to have a clear airway.
🔸 Offer tummy time when they are awake and supervised. This will help strengthen their neck muscles to aid in supporting their own heads.
🔸Remove all loose bedding from their cot as these are a SIDS risk, and once rolling they wont serve their purpose as your baby does cot jujitsu.
🔸 Ensure your little love sleeps on a firm, flat mattress. You may find that once rolling they need to transition from a basinet into a cot too.
🔸 As always, keep their face and head uncovered and airways clear of any loose bedding or clothing.

It can feel nerve wracking but also developmentally normal as your little one learns new skills and tricks that they may find a new natural sleeping position.
