Pebbles Montessori Cashmere opened in September 2015 and operates from a beautifully renovated villa in Cashmere. We are licensed for 37 children aged 3 months - 6 years and are open every day from 8.00am – 5.30pm including school holidays. We embrace the Montessori philosophy as well as our early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki. Our teachers are early childhood trained or in training and are Montessori trained or experienced.

This morning, we found a beautiful whāriki putiputi (flower carpet) in our outdoor area! Tamariki were excellent helpers and kaitiaki (guardians). They performed mahi-tahi (team-work) and swept all the beautiful putiputi away, after taking a mandatory photo of course!

Two library visits in a week! Our fantastic kaiako are always so proactive in getting out and about when the opportunity presents. On this trip, not only did tamariki enjoy their pukapuka of choice at the library but they also learnt about keeping our neighbourhood clean and the importance of giving to charity.

Just like us children need time and space to process their experiences & emotions 🍃

This is why the over-scheduling of activities is often detrimental to a child’s emotional health…

Not because there is anything wrong with activities, but because the overall pace of the child’s schedule doesn’t allow them enough downtime to recalibrate.

💛 Resilience is built in the space between resistance and rest.

When we don’t have any challenges, we don’t experience growth.

But if we don’t have time to rest, we risk staying in a stressful state too much of the time.

🍃 The amount of unscheduled downtime a child needs is based on the individual child. It is influenced by a child’s age & temperament.

If your child is older, you can talk with them about the pace of their schedule.
If your child is younger, look for signals such as the increase of exhaustion or challenging behavior.

If you notice that your child is struggling more with negative emotions & behavior, the pace of their schedule could be something to consider…

Just like us, children need unscheduled time and space for the cultivation of their emotional health 💛💛💛
