We have some dinosaur fanatics here at Mamma Bears so a group of tamariki got to make this 3D gigantic T.Rex puzzle. They were so excited and it was so amazing to see them working together, communicating and problem solving together to achieve the goal. Check out how happy they are with the product! :)

Recently we have been learning about dinosaur fossils. Tamariki love dinosaurs and this was a good experience to further extend on their learning. We looked at different types of fossils, what they look like, why we need them, and what they are. We then created our very own dinosaur fossils and are looking forward to exploring these in play.

Today is Pink Shirt Day, it is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. We took the opportunity to talk together today about being a friend, not a bully. The children shared their ideas about what it means to be a good friend and what to do if someone is unkind to them or to someone else. We had these discussions while colouring in, some of the ideas shared about how we can be a good friend were: "we can play", "be happy", show love". When asked what we should say when someone is being a bully, the children said they would say: "be nice", "be happy", "give a hug".

For mothers day here at Mamma Bear Childcare Childcare, we celebrated with a special mothers day breakfast. The tamariki made special gifts (chocolates and a card) leading up to it for the mummies and on the day, we had a jewellery making station, a colouring in station and a pancake making station. The tamariki had such a wonderful time spending time with their mum's and nana's and it was so special to see the bond that they had.
To all the mum's, nana's, grandma's, step mum's and any other other mum figures, we here at Mamma Bear Childcare wish you all had a very special mothers day on Sunday :)

Our future artists. We had some self portrait fun yesterday. Tamariki got to look at themselves in the mirror and communicate what they could see. Some used their imagination and said they could see a T-rex in the mirror, others pointed to their facial features, and others used no verbal cues such as smiles and pointing.
This was a good experience for tamariki to use their imagination, how to recognize their features, themselves, and emotions. Then interpretation how they see this on paper.

Drawing is such a satisfying learning experience for young children and our tamariki just love our new outdoor art easel – through drawing they express their feelings, experience, heighten their thinking skills and develop their fine motor skills. Children develop their hand eye co-ordination by controlling where they want to make the pencil marks. At first very young children will explore what marks they can make and as they gain confidence and control, they will purposefully plan for their marks to represent their ideas and feelings.

On the 19th April, we posted about our class focus being that we are learning about how to positively express our emotions and we said that we were working on a project here and it has now been complete. We made this Feelings Whare! It is a space where the tamariki can go when the tamariki are feeling big emotions and where they can use the strategies that we have been learning to self regulate. The tamariki have been so excited to use this. We had a discussion about what they might like to see in it and we have incorporated all of the colours that they shared and made it extra comfy for them. What an amazing journey it was to create this and we are so proud of how it turned out :)

Today we got artistic with chalk on our new outdoor art easel we got made for us by our handy Manager and her friend who is a Woodwork Teacher at a School. Our new outdoor art easel will provide the tamariki opportunities to be creative and develop their physical skills such as balance as they stand up while drawing, raise their arms above their heads to reach the top of the black board. The art easel is also a great place to develop social skills and communication as 4 children can draw or paint alongside each other, share, take turns, have conversations about their creations and admire each other's. We can't wait to try painting on the new outdoor art easel!

Over these Easter holidays the tamariki at Mamma Bears have been making a positive impact to our local community. We had discussions around how there are people in our community whose bellies are hungry as they dont have a lot of food at home. We explained that through giving we can help others and their bellies feel very happy. We then worked as a team to create delicious apple and cinnamon muffins before then delivering it to our local community shed.
Tamariki are learning about empathy and kindness. They are developing an awareness about the world around them and how they can be apart of a positive change through giving. Tamariki are learning valuable life skills as they develop compassion, generosity, respect, and take responsibility to do good for the world and the people in it.

Here at Mamma Bears, we have been focusing on developing our understanding of our emotions and learning how to positively express them. We have recently acquired this book, 'Kei Te Pehea Koe?' and it has become a wee favourite in our centre. The tamariki are becoming quite familiar with all the different emotions and we have gotten some wonderful feedback from our whanau that the tamariki have been taking this knowledge home and even teaching teaching their parents about feelings.

Tamariki enjoyed our dress up day today. There was so many amazing costumes! Tamariki got to explore some special Easter tables and then go on an Easter egg hunt outside. There was smiles all round as each child found their very own egg to decorate with paint later. We then finished off with a picnic lunch before then celebrating our friends 4th birthday :) Enjoy all the photos below.

We are very proud of our tamariki and the learning and development that they have achieved around our current group topic. Tamariki have been learning about communication and feelings where they learn to identify, express and understand each emotion. Whanau have mentioned that tamariki are also expressing their learning at home as well as teaching some parents also. This is upholding the Maori principle of Ako, where tamariki both teach and learn. Here is some images below of tamariki exploring their understanding of feelings.

Here at Mamma Bears, we celebrate creativity and we have a variety of dress ups that are available for the tamariki to wear to spark this. Dressing up in costumes allows opportunities to develop an understanding of their world around them and create different fantasy scenarios. We have chef costumes, doctors, fairies, korowai, butterflies, dragons and lots of other options for our tamariki. It is a way for them to explore language, their imagination and to develop their growing friendships aswell.

It was a rainy day here at Mamma Bears, so we had a go with some robot building. The first objective - Making a fan. We found out that we our electronics didn't work. The next objective - Making a car that a fan moved. Still the electronic components did not work. Our result - A car that we pushed down a ramp to make it go.

Here at Mamma Bears, we teach perseverance and having the courage to try new things. If something doesn't work the way we expect, we keep trying and we don't give up!
This was a cool activity to see the tamariki working together to create their model and for them to use their problem solving skills to come up with a solution on how to fix our electronic issues. It also created a sense of Ako where both kaiako and tamariki were learning together.

Ka mate kāinga tahi, ka ora kāinga rua.
There is more than one way to achieve an objective.

Here at Mamma Bears, we love gardening. Whanau will often bring in seeds and my little gardens for tamariki to plant. Tamariki enjoy watching and helping with the process of harvesting and growing food. Tamariki then get to take some kai home once harvested for them and their whanau to share.

Here at Mamma Bears, we love our board stories. Board stories are such a great way for tamariki to learn counting, language, social skills, colours and so much more. We have optional group times here at preschool, but the tamariki cant get enough of our beautiful board stories so it is always a packed group time when these come out :)

Today here at Mamma Bear Preschool we had an Aroha Day. Our class focus at the moment is learning all about our emotions and how we can express them in a positive way. We also used this as a way to give back and fundraise for the cyclone relief fund and teach the tamariki about kindness and compassion. We had many activities that represented our red and pink dress up Aroha day and we all had such a great time celebrating one of our core Mamma Bear Values.

On hot days like today we encourage each child to make sure they have a po'tae (hat) on their mahunga (head) and to use encouragement and reminders such as "kuhuna to' p'otae" Wear your hat.

It has been a couple of rainy inside days here at Mamma Bear Christchurch and we have had some fun activities happening. This was one of them where the tamariki got to do some finger/hand painting. Painting can help children develop hand, eye, arm and body coordination, develop finger and hand muscles, experiment with colour and texture and begin to develop writing skills.
Ka mau te wehi tamariki!

Our new group topic is surrounding our communication. Where tamariki learn ways to express themselves with others and understand their own and others feelings.

Tamariki explored the angry faces using the centre phone and then were encouraged to express what is something that makes them feel angry. It was lovely to see the different interpretations of the experience as some related it to the emotion of feeling sad and others related it to what they need when they feel angry such as a "Hug". Others expressed scenarios that they have seen or experienced with other people or themselves when feeling angry such as when they cant come to preschool. We discussed how when we feel angry it is best to go and talk to someone. As when we do this others might be able to give them solutions, nurturing and support.

Supporting children's physical development is important to us at Mamma Bear Christchurch. A fun activity is an egg and spoon race! The tamariki stood up in groups and were ready to race around the track. They had their eggs on the spoons and if it fell of they picked it back up and continued their race. This was a great activity for physical development. The tamariki had to balance and coordinate the egg and the spoon together, while also problem solving if they should move around the track fast or slow to not drop the egg. This was also a great activity for the tamariki to develop a sense of achievement when they made it all the way around the track, ka pai tamariki ma! This is also a fun actvity that you can try at home with a wooden or metal spoon and a wooden egg or small ball.
