We held our annual Daffodil Day appeal last week and proudly raised $70 for the Cancer Society. Ngā mihi nui to everyone for their generostiy. We dressed in kōwhai yellow and enjoyed a special morning tea visit from Lemmy the Lamby, thanks to the Tyler whānau! Kindergarten continues to be a place of rich exploration where science trials and investigations are encouraged. The tamariki particularly loved exploring the volcano brought in by the Isaac family which provided many opportunities for discovery and learning. Our curriculum continues to support and extend akonga in a space that recognises, notices and responds to the uniqueness of every individual.

At South End we recognise that exploration is essential for fostering social connections and stimulating brain development. Last week we engaged in a variety of experiences from cooking camp toast with Anna and buttering our own spreads on, to building with loose parts, making donuts, creating our own lava lamps at kotahitanga mat time during science trials, and using our big imaginations to re-enact fishing and camping. Through exploration our tamariki encounter diverse situations that challenge their thinking, but most of all they get to do it having the best fun, with time and space to investigate to their hearts content.

The proposed changes to funding within Early Childhood Education (ECE) will have a wide-reaching effect on everyone who accesses ECE or works as a qualified registered teacher, especially those working in not-for-profit centres (such as kindergartens) or those who actively and intentional hire 100% qualified teachers.
What is clear is that education is not valued in the right way by the current government, with special focus on changing the ECE landscape despite research that supports just how vital education in the early years is!
The impact of these proposed changes will have a substantial effect on the fully qualified with bachelor's degrees, fully registered teachers, some of us may lose our jobs - especially if they remove the funding provided for 100% qualified teachers, others could be paid minimum wage with the removal of ALL pay parity (so not just pay parity between private and public ECE, but the pay parity that Kindergarten has with primary).
We have a world leading ECE Curriculum, yet it feels that we’re not worthy of being called teachers, our bachelor's degrees are not held in high regard, and we can simply be replaced by the untrained, unqualified and inexperienced
This government believes that your children, your grandchildren, your great grandchildren and your mokopuna are not worthy of qualified teachers, or of sufficient funding to do our jobs. This government and the funding review are not even looking at the mass amounts of profit that are being made by large private ECE companies in this country.
We love our jobs! We love TEACHING your tamariki, supporting & helping them grow into strong capable learners but if this government is elected again, it is highly possible that all of this will change, and quickly too.
You and your tamariki matter to us, and because of this we strongly encourage you to enrol to vote (and please vote), ask questions and talk to people about the impact this could have on your whānau and the people that matter to you. See less

At South End Kindergarten, kotahitanga, manaakitanga and whānaungatanga come together beautifully when we sit as one at kai times. From a very valued te ao Māori lens, it is then, that tamariki slow down, connect with one another and experience the calmness of being together. Sitting alongside our friends, whānau & kaiako creates a rich sense of belonging where connectedness and shared experiences nurture our relationships. It is also a time to settle the mauri within, providing our tinana with the nourishment and sustenance it needs to grow, learn and flourish. In these simple moments of eating together, we are nurturing not only our bodies, but also our connections, our mana and our sense of collective wellbeing🌿

There is something special about watching tamariki come together in small groups where ideas, curiosity and creativity are shred and extended. Through mahi tahi-working together, our tamariki are exploring problem solving, negotiating, communicating and learning from one another across a rich range of curriculum experiences. Whether they are creating, constructing, investigating, imagining or discovering, each child brings their own knowledge and perspective, contributing to a shared learning journey.

What an exciting start to our morning! After temperatures dropped to -4*C overnight, our kindergarten was transformed into a magical winter wonderland. Thick layers of frost had frozen into sheets of ice across logs, tables, tyres, water trays, buckets and even on top of our worm farm. Some pieces of ice were up to 1-2 centimetres thick providing endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Armed with a variety of tools-including scrapers, spades, spoons, scoops and natural materials-the tamariki became enthusiastic 'ice excavators' carefully working together to lift and free the ice from different surfaces. They experimented with different techniques, discovering that some ice peeled away in large sheets while other pieces needed gentle tapping or levering to release them. As the ice cracked and broke apart, the children listened to the 'crunching' and 'smashing' sounds it made. They noticed how incredibly freezing cold it felt in their hands and giggled as they held it against their cheeks. Many couldn't resist tasting their discoveries, declaring the fresh ice was "yummy!"

We have had such a lovely time celebrating Matariki this past month. South End is very whānau based with a wide representation of mokopuna, cousins and siblings. We pride ourselves on our connectedness too with our hapori which often means more than just community. In our learning space, hapori is about strong relationships and our sense of belonging we share with one another. It reflects uara/values such as atawhai; caring for others and mahi-tahi -working together to build meaningful connections. At South End Kindergarten, hapori is important because it helps tamariki and their whānau feel welcomed, valued and connected. Through these relationships, children learn to contribute, respect others and develop a sense of belonging which aligns with the goals of Te Whāriki, our early childhood curriculum. A big mihi to Kaiah and Te Ao Aroha for opening our evening with a beautiful karakia. Tino pai tō mahi kōrua. Very brave to stand proud in your culture in front of an audience!
