Toastmasters Cambridge New Zealand

Monday 8th June. We had our usual hybrid meeting tonight. We're having two of them a month now to keep costs down. The other two meetings will be on Zoom only.

The theme was "The Power of Gratitude" and the word of the night was "Attention."

We had two speeches, from Justin on his footballing career, from his start as a schoolboy, and from Julie on banned books. She had samples of books which had once been banned, like Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Both were good speeches and Julie's was something of an eye-opener.

Paul gave us some very good questions in Table Topics, centred on history, mostly recent, ie 20th century. Table Topics is always good fun.

All in all, an excellent meeting, as usual. The Raceway's room is a good venue though it's getting a bit small since we get visitors who like us and join up.

A quick update: at our committee meeting last night, we decided to defer our open meeting until the 15th of this month. The venue is still the Cambridge Raceway.

We're having an open meeting next Monday, 15th June, and we're a hybrid club so guests can use Zoom if they want to try us out before joining. The physical venue is at the Cambridge Raceway and the contact to get the Zoom address is [email protected]

There's plenty of parking at the Raceway of course, and guests are always welcome, whether in person or on Zoom.

Our meeting tonight, Monday 18th May, was good fun as usual. We had only one speech, a crackerjack from Paul which went down really well.

Table Topics were based on the theme of getting out of our comfort zones, and our 2 guests bravely took a Topic. They aquitted themselves well.

We had our Annual Business Meeting tonight, and all members voted to approve the substantial increase in club dues caused by the cancellation of our nice cheap Council room and by the weakness of the NZ dollar against the US. Toastmaster International's 60 USD fee becomes over 100 NZD, and that's every 6 months. $200 a year, plus local costs, principally room hire.

Our search for a new venue continues. At present we're alternating between real meetings at the Cambridge Raceway committee room and virtual meetings on Zoom.

Last Monday, we had a pleasure to welcome some special guests to our meeting. One of them was Laura Knight coming all the way from Pompano Beach Toastmasters. Their club also meets at 7pm on Mondays, same as us - sounds like a sister club connection 😊

Happy New Year from us all at Toastmasters Treetown Cambridge club…we are resuming our meetings this coming Monday, 12 January at 7pm after the holiday break. Have you made any NY resolutions? We had our final meeting of 2025 on Monday. Our theme was “Traditions”…it’s that time of year! We were each able to reflect on worldly traditions, family customs and to speculate on new ones we’d like to introduce given the chance!
