Last week, there was a buzz of excitement among the tamariki and kaiako as they planned a cook-off. The idea was that anyone interested in cooking could participate, while those who preferred to judge could take on that role. The first step was to make a plan for the day. We gathered around the ahi and decided to start with a hīkoi into the ngahere, then return early to begin the bake-off.
We set off on our hīkoi and eventually reached the hut. The tamariki had a great time exploring, climbing, creating, and enjoying their kai. A group of tamariki went with Kayla and discovered the big zip line hidden in the ngahere. Mastering the zip line required learning how to slow down, and before long, most of the tamariki were confidently giving it a go.
After our adventures in the ngahere, we returned to The Grove and had a kōrero about the cook-off. We discussed who wanted to participate and who preferred to continue playing. The tamariki then split into groups, ready to get cooking. The first task was to get the ahi going, which involved cutting wood and using flint and steel to start the fire.
We had two tamariki making cinnamon scrolls, two making pikelets, two making popcorn, and two making orange and lemon juice. Each group got busy creating their dishes, carefully following recipes to prepare their mixes and then cooking over the ahi. Once the kai was ready, the judges had their taste and shared their thoughts.
The learning that happened during this activity was rich and varied. The tamariki developed practical skills such as fire-making, measuring ingredients, and following recipes. They practiced teamwork, taking turns, and sharing resources. The cook-off also encouraged creativity as they experimented with different flavors and techniques, and gathered produce from The Forest, our gardens, hen house and orchard. Furthermore, it provided an opportunity to strengthen their social skills, as they communicated and collaborated with their peers.
The judges decided not to declare a winner this time, everything was fabulous, choosing instead to give everyone another chance to refine their skills and have another go! Next time, we will hone our planning skills, decideding what to cook the week before so we can add some complexity and ensure we have everything we need, making the experience even better!
Whatever the weather... School Holidays in their happy place! 🥰

Today at Kura, we embarked on our first mini project within our larger term project - the highly requested idea of building huts. With several inspiring ideas on the table, the tamariki eagerly began brainstorming, shaping, and planning their unique huts. We collectively listed the necessary items to bring along. Each tamaiti had to carry one item up to the Blueberry Patch, whether it was rope, a first aid kit, a tarp, art supplies, or even our clean "poo bucket."
On our hīkoi to the blueberry patch, anticipation filled the air, and the tamariki were eager to find their perfect spot for building. Upon arrival, safety was our top priority, and we conducted a quick hazard check. The tamariki surveyed the area, looking above for potential hazards like loose branches, checking around for sturdy trees, and below to ensure we didn't disturb any emerging saplings.
Once the safety check was complete, the creativity flowed freely as the tamariki dove into constructing their huts, utilizing both the materials we brought and the resources around them. What emerged were incredible structures, each reflecting the unique vision and ingenuity of its young architect. While participation in the activity was optional, every tamaiti eagerly engaged, showcasing their enthusiasm and creativity throughout the day. Little did they know the degree of communication, maths, science and art that went into their thinking and problem-solving as they built!
Ka pai tō mahi tamariki ma - we can't wait to see what you get up to next week!
