For autistic children, navigating big emotions can sometimes feel overwhelming. Whether it’s frustration, excitement, or sensory overload, these intense feelings are part of the journey—and as parents, carers, and supporters, we play a crucial role in helping them manage these emotions. 💖

Building emotional regulation skills takes time and patience, but with the right tools and strategies, autistic children can learn to understand, express, and manage their emotions more effectively. Here are some helpful approaches to try at home:

🧠 1. Understand the Triggers:
Identifying what causes big emotions is the first step to supporting your child. Is it loud noises, transitions, or unexpected changes? Keep a journal or notes to spot patterns and anticipate triggers.

🛠️ 2. Create a Calm Corner:
Set up a safe, sensory-friendly space where your child can go when they’re feeling overwhelmed. Fill it with items like weighted blankets, noise-cancelling headphones, favourite books, or sensory toys to help them self-soothe.

📊 3. Use Visual Aids:
Emotion charts, traffic light systems, or feelings thermometers can help your child identify and communicate how they’re feeling. Visual tools make abstract emotions more tangible and easier to understand.

🗣️ 4. Teach Emotional Vocabulary:
Help your child build a “feelings library” by naming emotions in real-time. For example, “It looks like you’re feeling frustrated because the game isn’t working.” This helps them recognise and label their emotions.

📕 7. Use Social Stories:
Social stories are short, personalised narratives that help autistic children understand situations and emotions. For example, a story about managing frustration during a group activity can prepare them for future challenges.

🌟 Why It Matters
Teaching emotional regulation isn’t just about managing meltdowns—it’s about empowering autistic children to feel confident, understood, and capable. These tools help them navigate life’s challenges while honoring their unique ways of processing the world.

Every child is different, so experiment with these strategies and adapt them to suit your child’s needs. Remember: progress may be slow, but every small step is a win worth celebrating

💬 Strengthening Communication: Tips for Improving Family Communication in 2025 💬

As we step into the new year, one of the best ways to strengthen your family’s foundation is through effective communication. It’s not just about talking—it’s about truly listening. When we listen, we show our children they matter, building understanding and trust.

Here are some tips to improve communication with your family this year:

1️⃣ Set Aside Time to Talk:
Make time each day to connect, whether it’s during meals or before bed. This ensures everyone feels heard and valued.

2️⃣ Practice Active Listening:
Listen actively—maintain eye contact, reflect on what’s said, and engage thoughtfully. This makes conversations more meaningful and shows your kids they are being heard.

3️⃣ Be Open and Honest:
Encourage openness by sharing your thoughts and feelings. When parents model honesty, kids feel safe to express themselves too.

4️⃣ Use Positive Language:
Reframe statements to be positive. For example, “Let’s try it this way” instead of “Don’t do that.” Positive language reduces misunderstandings and promotes cooperation.

5️⃣ Create a Safe Environment for Feelings:
Let your kids know it’s okay to express emotions, whether it’s excitement or frustration. Validating their feelings helps them feel supported.

6️⃣ Implement “Feelings Check-ins”:
Start each family interaction by asking how everyone’s feeling and why. This simple habit opens the door to deeper conversations.

✨ Why It Matters:
Good communication strengthens relationships, resolves conflicts, and builds empathy. By listening, we empower our children to connect with us and with their own emotions.

🌱 Make 2025 the year of better family communication.
Start with small changes and see how they build a stronger, more connected family.

That strange, hazy time between Christmas and New Year—where the days blur together and no one really knows what’s going on. Is it Tuesday? Saturday? Are we still eating leftovers, or is it time for resolutions? Betwixtmas can feel disorienting for adults, but for kids, especially neurodivergent ones, this in-between time can be particularly unsettling.

Routines are out the window, excitement from the holidays is fading, and the anticipation of a new year can feel overwhelming. So, how can we help our kids feel grounded during this topsy-turvy time? 🫠

🔸 Reestablish Gentle Routines
While it’s okay to relax the rules, adding some structure can help kids feel more secure. Create a simple plan for the day—like a morning walk, quiet reading time, or an evening movie together.

🔸 Engage in Mindful Activities
Try grounding exercises like family yoga, breathing games, or even sensory play. Activities like baking, colouring, or puzzles can also create a calming focus.

🔸 Reflect on the Year Together
Use this time to reflect with your child. What were their favourite moments of the year? What are they excited about for next year? Simple conversations like these can help anchor them emotionally.

🔸 Get Outside
A walk in nature, even if it’s just to the park, can work wonders to reset everyone’s mood. The fresh air and movement can be grounding for kids (and parents too!).

🔸 Embrace the Quiet
If the holidays were full of excitement and stimulation, this is a perfect opportunity to wind down. Let them play with their new toys, enjoy unstructured time, or simply relax.

Remember, Betwixtmas doesn’t have to feel disorienting. It’s a chance to slow down, recharge, and connect as a family.

What are your go-to activities during this strange week? Share your ideas below! 🌟👇🏻

🌟 Mindfulness Through Christmas Yoga 🎄

Christmas Eve is one of the most magical nights of the year—but for kids, it can also be filled with big emotions, boundless energy, and a dash of overwhelm. Why not channel all that excitement into a calming, fun, and festive activity?

20/12/2024

This heartbreaking statistic reflects the world many neurodiverse children grow up in—a world where their differences are often misunderstood, criticised, or labeled as “problems” rather than celebrated for the unique strengths they bring.

Think about it: constant corrections, disciplinary actions for behaviours they can’t control, or being left out because they don’t “fit in.” Over time, these negative messages can chip away at their confidence, self-esteem, and belief in their own potential.

But here’s the good news: we can rewrite this narrative.

✨ Here’s how we can empower our neurodiverse children to thrive:

💪🏻Celebrate Their Strengths
Instead of focusing on what they can’t do, highlight what makes them amazing. Whether it’s creativity, problem-solving, a unique perspective, or deep focus on their passions, remind them that their differences are their superpowers.

👍🏻Use Positive Language:
Words matter. Frame challenges as opportunities for growth, and validate their efforts, no matter how small. For example, instead of “You’re too distracted,” try, “I love how your brain notices so many interesting things!”

💖Create Safe Spaces:
Let your child express themselves freely without fear of judgment. Build an environment where they feel loved and accepted for exactly who they are.

🗣️ Advocate for Them:
At school, in social settings, or even within the family, speak up for their needs and ensure they’re treated with kindness and respect. Your advocacy sends the message that they’re worthy just as they are.

🫂 Model Self-Compassion:
Show your child how to respond to mistakes or challenges with understanding rather than criticism. When they see you being kind to yourself, they’ll learn to do the same.

Every time we uplift our neurodivergent kids with positivity, encouragement, and love, we help counteract those 20,000 negative messages. We remind them that they are capable, valued, and extraordinary. 💛

When it comes to ADHD, many people still think of the stereotype: hyperactive boys who can’t sit still or stop talking. But ADHD in girls often looks very different—and because of this, it’s frequently misunderstood or completely overlooked. 💭

Girls with ADHD may not show the classic “hyperactive” behaviours. Instead, their symptoms tend to be more subtle and internalized, making it harder for parents, teachers, and even doctors to spot.

🔎 Here are some key ways ADHD can show up in girls:

💭Daydreaming or “Zoning Out”
🤦🏻‍♀️Chronic Forgetfulness
😭Overwhelmed by Emotions
💬Excessive Talking
😔Difficulty with Friendships
🦥Appearing “Lazy” or “Unmotivated”
📈High Perfectionism
🔁 Internalising Problems

🌟 Why These Symptoms Are Often Missed
Because these behaviors are less disruptive, they don’t draw the same attention as hyperactivity. Instead, girls might be labeled as “quiet,” “shy,” or even “dramatic.” They might fly under the radar in school, especially if they achieve average or good grades by putting in extra effort.

Unfortunately, this can lead to girls with ADHD being overlooked until they reach adulthood, when the demands of life make their challenges impossible to ignore.

🌈 How to Help
If you notice these signs in your daughter (or yourself), here’s what you can do:
✨ Talk to a Specialist: Seek an evaluation from someone experienced in recognizing ADHD in girls.
✨ Build Their Confidence: Remind them that ADHD doesn’t define them—it’s just one part of their unique makeup.
✨ Provide Tools and Support: Help them with strategies like planners, timers, and organizational aids to navigate challenges.
✨ Educate Others: Teachers, friends, and family members need to understand how ADHD can look different in girls.

Girls with ADHD aren’t “just emotional” or “daydreamers”—they’re creative, resourceful, and incredibly resilient. With the right support, they can thrive in amazing ways! 💪
