Bug Hunt in the Log

Today, the preschool children enjoyed exploring a log to see what little creatures they could find. They carefully looked underneath the bark and around the cracks, discovering bugs, insects, and other tiny creatures hiding inside. The children showed curiosity and excitement as they observed their findings and talked about where the bugs might live. It was a wonderful hands-on opportunity to explore nature and learn about the small creatures living in our environment.

🍋 Whisk Takers – Making Lemonade 🍋
Today our Whisk Takers made fresh lemonade! The tamariki squeezed lemons, poured the water, added the sugar, stirred the mixture, and enjoyed tasting their delicious creation.
Making lemonade helped develop fine motor skills, early maths through measuring, and teamwork as the children took turns and worked together.

Yesterday, our tamariki took part in an earthquake safety drill, learning what to do if the "ground starts to shake". Together we practised "Tuck like a Turtle", by getting down on our knees, covering our heads, and staying safe.
These regular drills help children build confidence and become familiar with emergency routines in a calm, supportive environment. Through hands-on practice, our tamariki are learning important life skills while developing an understanding of how to keep themselves safe.

This week our pēpi in the Kiwi Rūma have been exploring creative and nature-based experiences using salt, dye, flowers, leaves and other natural materials to encourage fine motor skill development. 🌿🎨
These open-ended activities support creativity, problem-solving and language, while encouraging curiosity and exploration. Through hands-on play, our tamariki are strengthening their mana aotūroa (exploration).

This morning, our tamariki got the opportunity to use our new letter stamps. They had so much fun exploring the letters through paint and using their own creativity.
Through this activity our tamariki are using and extending their fine motor skills, hand and eye co-ordination skills, literacy skills and spatial awareness.
We want to say a special thank you to Luna's Mum and Dad (Susan and Jordan) for donating these awesome letter stamps to our centre. Our tamariki will certainly enjoy using them through a variety of activities.

Whisk Takers:

Our tamariki took on the important job of helping to slice bananas for everyone to enjoy. Before we began, we had a meaningful discussion about knife safety, talking about how to hold a knife correctly, keeping our fingers safely out of the way, and taking our time while cutting. The children listened carefully and showed great responsibility as they put these safety skills into practice.
Preparing food together is a wonderful way to build confidence and independence while developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. The tamariki were proud of their contributions and excited to know they had helped prepare a healthy afternoon tea to share with their friends.
It's always so special to see our Whisk Takers learning valuable life skills through hands-on experiences. Ka rawe, everyone! 👏🍌

Whisk Takers:
This week we are celebrating Matariki and this morning we used our Whisk Takers session to create some whetu (star) cookies. Our tamariki followed instructions, learnt about what ingredients to use, used their fine and gross motor skills to pour, mix, crack eggs and mix some more.
This afternoon, they got to use the roller to roll out the dough, and then make their own stars using a star cookie cutter. Through baking, our tamariki are learning pre math skills, listening skills, turn taking and patience. Ka rawe tamariki ma, you did well and you will get to eat these yummy cookies for afternoon tea tomorrow.

Kindness is a foundational value in an early childhood setting and aligns closely with the principles and strands of Te Whāriki. It is demonstrated through caring relationships, empathy, respect, inclusion, and positive interactions between children, teachers, and whānau. When kindness is intentionally modelled and encouraged, children develop a sense of belonging and learn how to build respectful relationships with others.

Through warm, respectful, and responsive relationships, children learn to care for themselves, others, and the environment.

The principle of Ngā Hononga (Relationships) highlights the importance of learning through responsive and reciprocal relationships. Kindness strengthens these relationships by helping children feel valued, listened to, and respected. The principle of Whakamana (Empowerment) is reflected when children are encouraged to make kind choices, solve problems peacefully, and develop confidence in their ability to contribute positively to their community.
