Young Explorers A glimpse at what our explorers do Welcome to the Young Explorers Early Learning Centre. Children learn best through active exploration and discovery.

Young Explorers is a purpose built facility providing care and education for children aged 0-5 years from 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. A mixed age centre provides children with the opportunity to establish and maintain trustful relationships that are conductive to the learning process. Our infants and toddlers will be cared for by a primary caregiver whom will work closely with you and your

family establishing routines that are reflective of their home environment. Our centre will provide your child with the time to play, investigate and question the world around them. We will empower your child by providing them with choices, flexible routines and opportunities for them to direct their own learning. Our passionate and dedicated educators will invite and encourage you to actively participate in your child’s learning journey. When you share your visions, aspirations and dreams your child’s learning potential is unlimited. If you can imagine it, you can create it. If you can dream it you can become it.

Matariki is a time to pause, reflect, connect and celebrate the relationships that shape who we are.

Today we came together and welcomed grandparents and special whānau into our centre. Through shared experiences, conversations, creativity and play, our tamariki had the opportunity to learn alongside the people who hold their stories, traditions and memories.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we value children as capable, curious learners and recognise that learning is deeply enriched through relationships. Bringing generations together creates meaningful opportunities for children to explore identity, strengthen their sense of belonging, and honour the knowledge that is passed from one generation to the next.
Thank you to all of our grandparents and whānau who joined us to celebrate Matariki. Your presence helped create a rich, authentic learning experience that our tamariki will treasure.

Our under 2s don't need to be rushed—they need the time and freedom to wonder, investigate, and discover. Every object or material provides an opportunity for children to develop working theories about the world around them.

There is endless magic to discover in the ngāhere when our tamariki are free to explore, imagine and wonder! ✨🌿

At Young Explorers we regard the environment as the third teacher. Children are encouraged to actively explore and investigate their surroundings. Their play will be guided by educators whom will work alongside them facilitating their learning, provoking their curiosity and devleoping their capacity to make meaning of the world around them.

Who Im I

Using play dough as a form of representation, Olive carefully created her whānau, shaping a long line of heart shaped figures and thoughtfully adding details such as eyes, mouths and legs to each person.
It was wonderful to see Olive drawing on her growing understanding of herself and the important people in her life. Through this experience, she demonstrated her ability to represent people symbolically, communicate her ideas and make meaningful connections between our project work and her own experiences. Olive’s play showed that she is beginning to internalize and express her sense of identity, using creative materials to tell the story of who she is and where she belongs.
This learning moment highlights Olive’s developing confidence as a communicator, her creativity and her growing awareness of the relationships that help shape her world. The time, detail and effort it took her was incredible to watch unfold.

Tuakana–Teina: Learning Together, Growing Together

We value the beauty of mixed-age learning through the concept of Tuakana–Teina.
In a Tuakana–Teina relationship, older children (tuakana) support and guide younger children (teina), while younger children learn by observing, listening, and participating alongside their older peers.

Benefits for younger children (teina): • Learn new skills through observation and imitation • Build confidence in a safe and supportive environment • Develop language and social skills through interactions with older children • Feel a sense of belonging within the wider learning community

Benefits for older children (tuakana): • Develop leadership and responsibility • Strengthen communication and empathy • Build confidence as capable and competent learners • Deepen their own understanding by teaching and supporting others.

Through these meaningful relationships, children learn that everyone has something valuable to offer. Leadership, kindness, patience, and collaboration naturally flourish when children learn alongside one another.

Together, we grow stronger, learn more deeply, and create a community where everyone belongs.

With winter now upon us......

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."

There’s something powerful about watching children slow down in nature.

Shoes off in the grass, hands in the dirt, listening to birds, climbing trees, feeling the wind — these moments do more than fill time. They help children feel grounded, safe, and connected to their bodies.

When children are dysregulated, nature often becomes the calm their nervous system is searching for. Outdoor play supports self-regulation by reducing stress, encouraging movement, sparking curiosity, and creating space to breathe without pressure.

Not every child can “talk through” big feelings. Sometimes they need puddles, fresh air, mud kitchens, sunshine, and open space first.
In a world that moves fast, nature reminds children — and adults — to slow down.
