Joining Magic Garden – A Gentle Beginning

Starting early childhood care is a big change — for babies and toddlers, and for their parents too.

At Magic Garden, we don’t believe there is one formula for helping a child settle. Every child has their own personality, routines and ways of finding comfort. So rather than rushing the process, we slow things down, get to know each child and build trust at their pace.

Before starting, families spend time visiting Magic Garden, often over two or three weeks. Our Room Leader works with each family on a transition plan, and an assigned Key Teacher becomes a familiar and trusted person for both child and parents.

And it’s often the little moments that tell us it’s working.

When Liam visited, our teachers noticed his fascination with lights. So for his first full day, his Key Teacher Charne created a special area of fairy lights in jars just for him. A week or so later, Liam reached out for Charne at drop-off.
His mum Antoinette remembers thinking: “I knew… he is happy here.”

Seven-month-old Eleanor’s parents, Farzad and Shay, saw Charne carefully follow Eleanor’s cues — knowing when to engage, when to give her space and when she needed reassurance. Within around a week she had settled and was happily going into Charne’s arms each morning.

For Ezra, who started at 11 months, his parents Jiayan and Liu particularly valued his relationship with Key Teacher Lily and the time she took to share the little observations from his day.
“We truly value the time and thought she puts into sharing them with us.”

More recently, they watched Ezra make a “very smooth” transition from our Infant Room into our Toddler Room — another change approached with the same care and thoughtfulness.
Our philosophy, influenced by RIE/Pikler and Reggio Emilia, is grounded in respectful relationships. We allow children to develop confidence and independence in their own time, while everyday moments — feeding, changing, settling and playing — become opportunities to build connection and trust.

Because a successful transition isn’t simply a child who doesn’t cry at drop-off.

It’s a child who gradually comes to understand:
I know these people.
I feel safe here.
I belong here.

When you are very small and entering a big new world, a gentle beginning matters.

Fridays are getting even more magical at Magic Garden 🌿💃

From Friday 11 September, we’re adding something new to Friday mornings at Magic Garden — a weekly dance programme for our Over Twos and Over Threes, led by our dance teacher, Lilliana. It will utilise the new stage we have built in our Over 3s play area and which is intended to be used for dance and other performances.

And in true Magic Garden style, it’s about much more than learning dance steps.

Our first programme is called Tree Dance 🌳💃🕺— an evolving story told through music, movement and imagination.

Beginning as a tiny seed, the children will explore the journey of growing into a strong, mature tree. Each Friday, the story will develop a little further as the children add new movements, ideas and layers of their own.

Through dance, children have opportunities to express themselves in ways that don’t require words. They can experiment, imagine, take creative risks, build confidence and respond to the ideas of the children around them.

We’ve seen the power of this kind of learning before at Magic Garden. When music, drama and movement become part of a story, children don’t simply participate — they begin to make it their own. They remember, interpret, invent movements, encourage one another and often surprise us with where they take an idea.

That’s the kind of learning we love.

Tree Dance will run for around 30 minutes every Friday morning, building progressively from week to week.

Early Learning Creative Journeys

No two Children’s Creative Journeys are the same — Turning Ideas into Something Extraordinary

One of the privileges of having children with us over several years is being able to look back and see just how far their thinking, confidence and creativity have grown.

Finn’s journey at Magic Garden is a wonderful example.

Over the years, our teachers have watched Finn develop an extraordinary ability to imagine something in his mind and then patiently work out how to bring it to life. His creations show an incredible eye for pattern, sequence, balance, order and detail — but what inspires us most is the thinking, patience and tenacity behind them.

At Magic Garden, children have the freedom to lead their own learning projects. Rather than every experience having a predetermined outcome, our teachers create environments rich with possibilities and give children the time, space and encouragement to explore their own ideas.

For Finn, that has meant access to an incredible variety of natural and open-ended materials. One day he might be outside moving rocks, timber, pipes and other large loose parts to construct something on an enormous scale. Another day, he might be completely absorbed in arranging tiny tiles, beads, stones and other treasures into an intricate piece of ephemeral art.

And Finn is rarely satisfied with stopping where he started.

“Can I have some more?” might mean more materials, another table, or even another space as his original idea grows into something much bigger. What begins as a simple concept develops through experimentation, problem-solving and persistence until Finn feels his vision is complete.

Looking back at his earliest creations and comparing them with what he produces today, the progression is remarkable. His designs have become more sophisticated and ambitious, but the qualities underpinning them have remained: curiosity, creativity, determination and a wonderful ability to see how many individual pieces can come together to create something extraordinary.

Finn’s artworks themselves may be temporary — eventually the pieces are returned and the materials used again — but the learning behind them is anything but.

They tell the story of a child developing his own ideas, testing possibilities, solving problems and discovering what he is capable of.

Keep creating, Finn. We can’t wait to see where your imagination takes you next.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to some of the incredible educators who make Magic Garden such a special place.

Today, we’re celebrating a remarkable milestone. Fiona is soon to celebrate 20 years as part of the Magic Garden family.

After joining us in 2007, Fiona quickly discovered she had found more than a workplace—she had found a community that shared her passion for seeing children as capable, curious learners. Over the past two decades, she has inspired hundreds of children with her calm, caring nature, her genuine relationships with families, and her belief that every child deserves to feel safe, valued and free to be themselves.

When asked what she hopes every new family knows about Magic Garden, Fiona’s answer says it all:

“You’re coming into a place where amazing happens. Your children are safe, well cared for and deeply loved. We truly become a home away from home.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

🌱 **Growing Our Own Teachers Part Two**

At Magic Garden, we're passionate about helping children grow—but did you know we're also passionate about growing great teachers?

Over the years, many student teachers have completed their practicum with us. Some arrived looking for experience, others for a fresh start, and some simply wanted a placement close to home. What they found was a team committed to mentoring, sharing knowledge, and helping them become the very best educators they could be.

"My journey to Magic Garden happened during my final out-of-home practicum in April last year. At first, I simply thought I'd found a centre close to home where I could complete the last placement of my degree before starting my job search.

But it didn't take long to realise that Magic Garden was different.
The children were genuinely happy. The teachers were genuinely happy. The environment was thoughtfully designed, and every interaction reflected respect for children.

One moment has always stayed with me. I watched my mentor support two children through a conflict with such authenticity, patience, and respect. I remember thinking, Wow... this is what quality teaching looks like. This was a place where children were truly valued, and where teachers were supported to help every child reach their fullest potential. I knew this was the kind of teacher I wanted to become.

During my practicum, I learned so much through the generosity, mentoring, and encouragement of the team. It almost felt as though the universe was listening—just as I graduated, Magic Garden was looking for new teachers. I joined the team last July, and every day I'm grateful that I found this place to begin my career."

Every journey to Magic Garden is different, but they all share something in common—a place where people are supported to learn, challenged to grow, and encouraged to become the teachers they aspire to be.

Magic Garden Playground Expansion 🛝 👷🏼‍♂️

You may have noticed some construction happening at Magic Garden over the long Matariki weekend!

We’re excited to be investing in our centre with an expansion of our Over 3s playground that will make Magic Garden even safer and create more space for children to learn, play and explore.

As part of our recent ownership change review, we’ve upgraded our emergency evacuation arrangements by creating a new, secure emergency exit from the playground directly to our assembly area. This includes a new deck, additional fencing and an alarmed emergency gate, providing a safe evacuation route while remaining secure during normal centre hours.

But this project is about more than safety. The new deck also expands our outdoor learning environment, giving children more room for imaginative play, discovery and connection. We’re already imagining how this space could evolve into a special area for performances, celebrations and community gatherings in the future.

Construction is well underway and should be completed over the coming week. In the meantime, the work area remains safely fenced off so children can continue to enjoy the playground as normal.

We’re proud to keep investing in Magic Garden and creating an environment that is safe, inspiring and full of opportunities for our tamariki to thrive. We can’t wait to share the finished space with you!

💚 **Rebecca's Story**

Rebecca first joined Magic Garden as a student teacher in 2018 while completing her Early Childhood Education studies. After spending 20 years working in an orphanage, she already understood the importance of patience, kindness and dedication. What she found at Magic Garden was a team that combined those qualities with exceptional teaching practice.

After graduating, Rebecca was offered a position in our Over Two's Room—and nearly eight years later she's still there, continuing to learn, grow and inspire children every day.

💚 **Claire's Story**

Claire's journey began as a Magic Garden parent. Watching her daughter thrive inspired her to change careers and study Early Childhood Education herself.

Throughout her degree, Magic Garden became her home centre, where she was supported by experienced mentors who generously shared their knowledge and encouraged her every step of the way.

When Claire graduated, she officially joined the Magic Garden teaching team—and we're so grateful she did.
