🌱 Ngā mihi nui, Paper4Trees! 🌱

At Puketapu Kindergarten, we use our special recycling bins every day and also reduce waste through our compost bin and worm farm. Through the Paper4Trees programme, these everyday actions have been rewarded with beautiful native trees and shrubs for our kindergarten!
Today, our tamariki enjoyed getting their hands into the soil and helping to plant our new rākau. Through experiences like this, they are growing their understanding of kaitiakitanga and the important role they have as kaitiaki/guardians of our environment. 🌳💚
A huge thank you to Paper4Trees for supporting our sustainability journey and helping us make our kindergarten and Aotearoa a greener place for future generations. 🌿♻️

Our latest addition to our Kindy garden is already proving to be a big hit! 🌿

This beautiful little outdoor picnic area provides the perfect space for our tamariki to gather, connect and enjoy imaginative play together. It has already inspired plenty of mixing, creating and shared conversations, we can’t wait to see how this special space continues to be enjoyed! 🍃

🌿 Our Mud Garden is Open! 🌿

We are so excited to share the newest addition to our Kindy – our very own mud garden! 🤎

A huge thank you to Rachel and her whānau for their hard work creating this wonderful space for our tamariki over the holidays. It has already been a huge hit, with children digging, mixing, creating, exploring and working together.

At Kindy we know that some of the richest learning happens through play. Our mud garden encourages imagination, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and a real connection with the natural world – all while having lots of messy fun!

We can't wait to see all the wonderful adventures, potions, mud pies and discoveries that will happen here.

✨⭐️✨What a lovely morning we've had celebrating Matariki mā Puanga together at Puketapu Kindergarten.

Our tamariki had a wonderful time yesterday peeling and chopping the vegetables kindly contributed by our whānau, before our delicious soup slowly cooked overnight in the crockpots. This morning, we came together to share warm bowls of soup and buns, with some whānau staying to enjoy kai with us and others taking soup to go.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated vegetables and joined us. Sharing kai is a beautiful way to connect, celebrate the Māori New Year, and strengthen the sense of community that makes our kindergarten so special✨⭐️✨

✨✨Over the past few weeks, our tamariki have been enjoying lots of meaningful experiences as we've celebrated Puanga mā Matariki together.

We've been busy creating beautiful star collages, playing Puanga star matching games, weaving a giant star made of natural resouces, making wishes for our stars, going on Matariki scavenger hunts and planting vegetables in our māra as we look ahead with hope and care for the future✨✨

Tamariki had such a fun morning settling into an art provocation that sparked endless ideas, creativity, and exploration. It was wonderful to watch them experiment with different techniques, share ideas, and learn from one another as they worked. Each tamaiti approached the experience in their own unique way, showing curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to take risks. Most importantly, they demonstrated the courage to step forward, have a go, and enjoy the process of creating alongside their peers.

Talofa lava from Puketapu Kindergarten! 🌺

This week we celebrated Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa with Samoan-inspired art, Pasifika puzzles, ocean-themed water play, and lots of language learning. 🌊

🌺 We learned new words including Talofa (hello), Alofa atu (sending you love), Savalivali (go for a walk), and practiced counting to five in Samoan: Tasi, Lua, Tolu, Fā, Lima.

A special highlight was introducing a Samoan prayer before kai alongside our daily karakia, led by Fotu. We also loved having Penelope, Fotu and Fina’s mum visit to read a Samoan story and teach us the song Savalivali.

Fa’afetai tele lava to our whānau and to Penelope, Fotu and Fina for proudly sharing their Samoan culture with us. ❤️🌺

Today at Puketapu Kindy we proudly stood together to acknowledge the importance of Pink Shirt Day, a day that shines a light on kindness, inclusion, and manaakitanga (care and respect for others).

Pink Shirt Day is an anti-bullying movement that encourages us all to be upstanders, not bystanders. It reminds us that every tamaiti deserves to feel safe, valued, and accepted for exactly who theyare. Here at our Kindy, we work hard to foster an environment where friendships are nurtured, differences are celebrated, and children learn the importance of empathy, respect, and using kind words and actions.

Through everyday interactions, conversations, and play experiences, our tamariki are learning how to support one another, stand up for what is right, and show compassion when others may need a friend. These early years are such an important time for building social and emotional competence, and days like today help reinforce the values we hold close within our kindergarten community.

Together, we can help create a world where kindness always has a voice. 💕

Kia ora whānau 💛

We know that drop-offs can sometimes feel a little heavy, those big feelings at the door can tug on everyone’s heartstrings. But we wanted to share a gentle reminder of what we so often see here at Kindy…

Tamariki are incredibly capable of settling once they feel safe, supported, and connected. With a little awhi (support), familiar routines, and the comfort of their kaiako and friends, those big emotions usually pass much quicker than you might think.

Take a look at this, because behind the tears at the gate is often a child who is soon laughing, playing, and fully engaged in their day 😊

Remembering Together | Kia maumahara tātou

This week at Kindy, our tamariki have been busy creating beautiful poppies for our handmade wreath and wall display. This kaupapa has sparked lots of thoughtful pātai (questions), with many tamariki wondering why we are painting poppies and who the people on the wall are.

As kaiako, we are taking a gentle and age-appropriate approach to these conversations. While we want to help tamariki begin to understand the significance of ANZAC Day, we are also mindful not to overwhelm or worry them. We have been sharing that this is a time to remember and honour the brave people who helped keep us safe and protect our freedom. We have also acknowledged that some animals, such as horses and dogs, showed great bravery too.

It has been heartwarming to see the pride each tamaiti has taken in their creations. As they hand their poppies to a kaiako, these small but meaningful moments become gentle reminders of how lucky we are, and how important it is to remember together - kia maumahara tātou.
