2025 India Pilgrimage with Geshe Wengchen
Overview: We'll begin in Bodh Gaya, home to the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment. After visiting some of Buddhism's most important pilgrimage sites, our journey ends in Varanasi, one of the longest-continually-inhabited cities in civilization, resting along the banks of the fab...

News from the Oasis
Interfaith Garden Working Bee
Interfaith Garden Working Bee!
The enthusiasm, kindness and hard work that everyone contributed at yesterday's Interfaith Garden Working Bee at DCI was inspiring and much progress was accomplished in the garden oasis!
Approximately 28 people participated, including quite a few people from the West Auckland Women's Interfaith Initiative, the Ahamadiyya Mosque in South Auckland, missionaries and other volunteers from the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as others. Each group offered a food blessing prayer before we shared a lovely afternoon tea at the end of the afternoon.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and made this such a joyful experience!

Veggie Garden and Other Grounds Volunteer Work
Thanks to the hard work of Claire and other veggie garden volunteers, the DCI vegetable garden is producing veggies! Ann, Jenny, Richard and their team of helpers have made great progress removing creeper vines and privet along the wall across from the stupa. Sandy continues to steadily tend and remove weeds from various parts of DCI's garden. Sarah and Brian have cleared a path through the new and old orchard that will soon be mow-able and have lifted the ever-growing flame tree. Other occasional volunteers have also helped us make progress in the garden.
With New Zealand's borders fully reopened we have also been happy and fortunate to welcome mutiple HelpX-ers (similar to WWOOFing) including young people from France, Canada, Israel/USA and Germany over the past couple of months who have used their weeding, digging and planting skills as well as hedge trimming and trimmer skills (and cleaning skills) to great effect! When they come they also have the opportunity, if they wish, to attend classes, meet with Geshe-la, enjoy guided meditations with Ven. Carolyn and read books from the library.

Lama Yeshe (Founder of DCI and FPMT) in Zurich, Switzerland, 1978. Photo by Ueli Minder
Asking Lama Yeshe:
How do we practice Dharma in the West while working full-time and living in the city?
An inspiring excerpt from a new Lama Yeshe book, Knowledge-Wisdom: The Peaceful Path to Liberation. Collected Teachings, Volume 1. Forthcoming from LYWA, spring 2023.
Knowledge-Wisdom The Peaceful Path to Liberation Forthcoming Book by Lama Yeshe
Q. How do we practice Dharma in the West while working full-time and living in the city with many personal and professional commitments? How can we adapt the teachings of the Buddha and integrate them fully into daily life? In what can we take sincere refuge?
An Excerpt of Lama Yeshe's Answer:
"How to answer that? Now, first of all, what is Dharma? What is Buddhism all about? It looks like there are so many subjects, so many philosophies, so many meditations, so much psychology. You feel there are so many things going on in Buddhism….
"Buddhism teaches two things: loving kindness for others, which eliminates self-cherishing concepts, and wisdom eliminating ignorant wrong conceptions in order to realize universal reality…
"What you should do is the essence: really learn what true love is and how to practice the techniques for developing it, and how to practice true wisdom. Wisdom is awareness, or comprehension, and knowing what’s going on in your mind. That’s the only business you need to be concerned with. Don’t worry about what’s going on in other peoples’ minds, in your friends’ minds…
"Buddhism teaches us how to develop loving kindness, but not by merely saying, 'You should love everyone.' We explain why we should have love and how to generate it...
"Meditation is not only sitting; it is also thinking about something. For example, let’s say you have to work until four or five o’clock and when you come back you are already tired, exhausted. So, you get home and maybe lie down and think back on your day—your work, how people reacted, how your mind worked, how many times you became angry, how many times disturbances happened. That’s a kind of meditation, thinking, “Was it worthwhile or not?” I think that’s good enough."
Lama Yeshe answered this question at the sixteenth Kopan meditation course. Excerpted from a new Lama Yeshe book, Knowledge-Wisdom: The Peaceful Path to Liberation. Collected Teachings, Volume 1. Compiled by Sandra Smith, edited by Nicholas Ribush and Uldis Balodis. Forthcoming from LYWA, spring 2023.

Sera Je Monastery offered a beautiful long-life puja for Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche on 14 October 2022 at the Main Prayer Hall in the monastery, and presented Rinpoche with a special “Gratitude Award” for the many decades of support Rinpoche has shown to the monastery, including the 25+ year accomplishment of the Sera Je Food Fund, which is now a full endowment covering the monastery’s yearly food expenses for over 2,000 Sangha.
"In honoring our gratitude to Venerable Lama Zopa Rinpoche, for his immense contribution to Buddha Dharma through his global network of the esteemed FPMT, that has undertaken several social and cultural projects besides its spiritual mission benefiting several sections of societies & communities and devotees alike in the past several decades. Living with Loving-kindness
"If we are living with loving-kindness, with compassion, with the precious thought of enlightenment, then we are practicing the essence of the Mahayana. The whole purpose of whatever we do within Mahayana Buddhism is to develop the good heart, and so whatever we do that helps bring this about helps us on the path to enlightenment. Then all temporary and ultimate happiness and all realizations come easily, with hardly any effort at all."
- Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche

DCI Sangha Attend Queen's Memorial
The DCI Sangha were invited to Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral to attend the Memorial Service for the late Queen Elizabeth II held on Monday, 26 September 2022.
The Queen's steadfast commitment to service as well as her care and compassion were some of her inspiring qualities that were celebrated at the service.
The procession, choir, pipe organ, bag pipes, beautiful stained glass church windows together with the warm interfaith welcome extended by multiple members of the Holy Trinity Cathedral's clergy and staff adorned the community prayer gathering.
Here are some photos from the evening.
