The Mushroom Smith started years ago in 2017 when I was first selling small Phoenix Oyster grow kits at farmers markets. After my postgraduate studies started to intensify I moved on from that, eventually taking up a role at Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research as a technician in the Mycology team. Curious about the fungi growing right here in our local bush?
I’m excited to be part of **Fabulous Fungi in Kirk’s Bush**, a fun, whānau-friendly walk where we’ll head into the ngahere and take a closer look at the fascinating fungi living around us.
Fungi are doing important work in every forest ecosystem, and this is a chance to slow down, look closely, and learn a little more about the hidden life of the bush in a simple and accessible way. No specialist knowledge needed — just curiosity and a willingness to explore.

Curious about mushrooms?
I’m running a beginner-friendly workshop called "From Mycelium to Mushrooms" where we’ll explore how oyster mushrooms grow and build a small grow kit for you to take home.
We’ll talk about the science in a simple, hands-on way — what fungi are, how mycelium works, what oyster mushrooms need to thrive, and how to care for your kit once you get it home. No prior knowledge needed, just curiosity.
