港東話 Kongtonese

我哋嘅農曆新年親子團拜，已經喺上星期日（年初六）順利舉行喇！當日大家都着得靚靚咁嚟慶祝。有小朋友同我哋拜年逗利是；有小朋友對舞龍舞獅木偶愛不釋手；有小朋友急不及待用金色墨喺紅紙上臨摹揮春；亦有喺外國長大嘅家長挑戰用毛筆寫中文字！

大家大細一齊發揮創意做搖鼓勞作、一齊影「格仔相」、一齊傾計，同享用蘿蔔糕、年糕、餃子、角仔、笑口棗等各款新年小食，讓我哋嘅下一代開心咁接觸廣東話、繁體字同埋香港文化。

另外，好多謝我哋當日嘅3位小幫手 Cindy、Nikki 同 Kath，佢哋各展所長，令成件事非常順利咁進行！

文化傳承，從來都唔係一個人嘅事。多謝大家一齊同行 💛

Our Lunar New Year Family Gathering was successfully held last Sunday (the sixth day of the Lunar New Year)! Everyone dressed up beautifully to celebrate the occasion. Some children greeted us with New Year wishes and received red packets; some couldn’t get enough of the dragon and lion dance puppets; some were eager to use gold ink to trace festive calligraphy on red paper; and some parents who grew up overseas challenged themselves to write Chinese characters with a calligraphy brush!

We got creative making hand-held drum crafts, took “photo strips”, chatted together, and enjoyed a variety of traditional New Year treats including turnip cake, sticky rice cake, dumplings, fried sesame pastries, and etc. It was a joyful opportunity for our next generation to connect with Cantonese, traditional Chinese characters, and Hong Kong culture.

A big thank you as well to our three wonderful helpers that day — Cindy, Nikki, and Kath — who each contributed their strengths and helped the event run so smoothly.

Cultural heritage is never a one-person effort. Thank you all for walking this journey with us 💛

🎶 廣東話親子唱遊班｜意向調查 🎶

萬眾期待嘅 「廣東話親子唱遊班」 終於都嚟啦 🎉👶👨‍👩‍👧

👶 對象：0–3 歲嬰幼兒及其家長
📅 日期：學期期間｜逢星期三（暫定三月份開始）
⏰ 時間：上午（實際時間將按意向調查結果而定）
📍 地點：奧克蘭Meadowbank
🎵 內容：唱歌、講故事、親子互動、家長交流時間等等 （將按實際年齡作出調整）

為咗可以安排俾最多小朋友參加，我哋特意準備咗一份 意向調查表，希望了解大家小朋友嘅年齡，以及可以出席嘅時間 📝💬

🎶 Cantonese Parent–Child Singalong Playgroup | Expressions of Interest 🎶

The long-awaited Cantonese Parent–Child Singalong Playgroup is finally here! 🎉👶👨‍👩‍👧

👶 For: Babies and toddlers aged 0–3 and their parents
📅 Date: During the school term | Every Wednesday (tentatively starting in March)
⏰ Time: Morning (exact time to be confirmed based on survey results)
📍 Location: Meadowbank, Auckland
🎵 Activities include: Singing, story time, parent–child interaction, and parent social time (Content will be adjusted according to the children’s actual ages.)

To make sure we can accommodate as many children as possible, we’ve prepared an Expressions of Interest survey. This will help us understand your child’s age and your availability 📝💬

⚠️ Please note: Completing the survey does not mean you are officially enrolled. Once we’ve collected most of the feedback, we will email participants with the final age grouping and class time details. Formal registration will open after that.

Yesterday marked the very first Kongtonese Workshop – Christmas Sensory Art Workshop 🎄✨

We were so happy to invite the incredibly talented Channis to lead our session and share her creativity with our community. Through her beautiful sensory art activities, our Cantonese-led workshop gave our under-2s more exposure to Cantonese, while creating a relaxed and joyful space for family bonding and shared experiences. The workshop also aimed to help parents connect with other Cantonese-speaking families.

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this first workshop such a special one 💛

喺香港出世，幾歲跟父母移民到紐西蘭，主修語言學。佢嘅廣東話流利程度同對繁體字嘅熟悉程度，足以令佢可以喺香港大既香港人堆入面「混水摸魚」😂 佢認為秘訣就係睇港劇同聽廣東歌時跟住歌詞一齊唱～

👩🏻‍🍼 Pearl
6 年前隻身由香港移民到紐西蘭，係一位受過專業訓練嘅蒙特梭利老師，曾經搞左2年蒙氏中文班。現為一位媽媽，混血囡囡差唔多 11個月大。佢覺得能夠講得一口流利廣東話嘅混血寶寶超有型😎，而家正努力實現呢個小小願景💪🏻

We’re Karen and Pearl, co-founders of 「港東話 Kongtonese」— two Hong Kong-born mums now living in New Zealand 🇭🇰🇳🇿

We’ve noticed fewer people speaking Cantonese and want to help keep this beautiful language alive. Living overseas, we hope our children (and yours too!) can stay connected to Hong Kong culture and grow up speaking our mother tongue. 💬❤️

That’s why we started Kongtonese — to support families passing on Cantonese and Hong Kong traditions to the next generation. ✨

We’ll be offering:

Moved from Hong Kong to New Zealand six years ago. A trained Montessori teacher and mum to an almost 11-month-old mixed-heritage baby 👶🏻, she’s passionate about helping little ones grow up speaking fluent Cantonese. 💪🏻
