Impact of NRNA NZ Everest Day Celebrations

A heartfelt thank you to Dr Ujwal Bastakoti and Kamal Bashel for your outstanding leadership in successfully organizing Everest Day 2026.

The recent announcement by the Southern Institute of Technology to establish a Nepal Scholarship inspired by the legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay is a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together with a clear vision and sustained advocacy.

For years, NRNA New Zealand and our community have proudly celebrated Everest Day, highlighting the extraordinary partnership between Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, and strengthening the cultural and historical connection between New Zealand and Nepal. These celebrations have been more than symbolic events. They have created awareness, built relationships, inspired young people, and encouraged institutions to recognise the significance of Everest Day and its values of courage, leadership, service, and international friendship.

Today, we are seeing the tangible impact of that collective effort. The establishment of a scholarship linked to this shared legacy demonstrates how community advocacy can influence institutions and create lasting opportunities for future generations. It is a reminder that when we consistently promote a cause, positive change follows.

Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to Everest Day celebrations over the years. This achievement belongs to the entire community. Let us continue working together to secure even greater recognition of Everest Day in New Zealand and further strengthen the friendship between Nepal and New Zealand.
