Ceramic college Ceramic college is a ceramic educational facility. It holds classes in ceramics for adults during the school term. We are in Belmont, North Shore, Auckland, NZ

Ceramic College is run by Teresa Watson, an award winning ceramic artist. Teresa has been teaching ceramics for the last 20 years from her home studio and art centers. The opportunity to house a ceramic studio in a beautiful historic church at 159 Bayswater Ave on the shore, was an opportunity not to be missed. The College is set up with 5 pottery wheels and a cupboard fill of glazes. The College

focuses on earthenware clays which are fired in an electric Shimpo kiln. Classes are available to adults and children.

We are a small family run ceramic studio which had no signage. Now we feel all grown up, because we have been here for over 12 years now and should maybe tell everyone driving past that inside the church is a ceramic studio. I’m loving the pop of colour and it almost matches the colour of the door.

Two past students, who had been at the college for a few years, have got together recently to fire and create this amazing project. It fills my heart to see the ceramic community still thriving even when the students leave the college and forge their own paths. Super excited that term 3 is now going to be a 10 week term. The students have been asking for a longer term forever, well it’s come true. No more rushing to get things done on time, we can now relax and enjoy the moment. A great way to let our bodies slow down, just as the winter season shows us. While we slow down during the break the repairs can be attended to. That’s the kiln lid outside getting its hinges replaced. Glad I’m not lifting that. We have a few spaces left for term 3, come join our creative community we would to see you.

Thursday morning class, making intentional markings. Slowing down and relaxing, touching clay, grounding ourselves and breathing the energy of what we are making. The sun pouring in from the church windows adding to the glow of the studio. Pure bliss. Beautiful work Jackie.

In nature you get beautiful greens and browns in the undergrowth, especially with fungus and mushrooms growing at this time of year. Autumn is a magical time of year, when the plants are transforming to a dormant state after the growth of the summer. These pieces resemble what our natural environment is experiencing.

Making your own glazes means lots of testing to get the right fit for the clay you apply it to and the temperature you are firing your kiln to. So when everything goes right the pieces look amazing, but when the raw material doesn’t respond to what the label says things can go wrong. Some raw materials have different names and some are pure evil!

We are coming up to our third week in the term and some beautiful handmade pieces have been made. These will go on the bisque shelf ready for their first firing. The black cups have been made on the wheel and then hand cut to create a beautiful surface for the glaze to sit on.
