Free unstructured play opportunities in nature fosters resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. Time spent in a natural outdoor environments positively affects EVERY AREA of child development, the more variety encountered, the more children will learn. Being outside fulfils children’s need for freedom and adventure, it supplies them with the opportunities to assess and experience risk, assessing risk when they are young enables children to learn how to problem-solve and make safe and logical choices as they grow. MY EXPERIENCE:

I am an experienced Early Childhood Educator, holding a Bachelor of Education from the University of Auckland. I have had experience working in both centre and home-based childcare over the last 12yrs. I hold a current first aid certificate. I have recently bought and moved into the Silverdale-Millwater area with my husband Dave and our two daughters Jade (2011) and Indie (2016), who both attend Silverdale School. I am passionate about children learning in the outdoors, and over the last 10 years I have been taking pre-schoolers on outdoor adventures. Over the last 3 years I have been developing my ‘Outdoor Adventure Kids’ Home-based Childcare program - supported by Kia Ora Kids (licensed home-based childcare provider). I have also continued to develop my knowledge with ongoing learning through a number of training providers, and plenty of hands-on outdoor adventures with my team of kids. I continuously read, reflect, research and develop my program. I have now moved to Silverdale and I am excited to be building a new ‘Outdoor Adventure Kids’ team. (Note: My Northshore program was always full, and I expect it to fill quickly in Silverdale – only 4 spaces available each day. Most of my families found a great weekly balance between kindy/childcare and my Outdoor Adventure Kids Days.) HOME ENVIRONMENT:

I live in Silverdale-Millwater, on a quiet street but conveniently close to the motorway on and off ramps. I have plenty of space inside and out – equipped with a mud kitchen, art area, swings, slide, trampoline and a big selection of resources… but heading out on daily adventures is my focus. ACTIVITIES PROVIDED:

Each day we will head out on our ‘Outdoor Adventures’ to the local beaches, reserves or regional parks like Wenderholm, Shakespear, and Long Bay for some outdoor adventure time – weather will determine how long we stay out. (If kids are comfortable and wearing clothing to suit the conditions they are happy outdoors all day). I believe learning to manage yourself in all weather conditions builds resilience, self-confidence and independence – key competencies I strive to help kids develop. An example of an Outdoor Adventure Kids 'sunny day' – arrive at chosen park and eat morning tea, discuss plans for the day and set boundaries, unpack resources and set-up tents/shelters (for any who need a nap or a sheltered play space), active free-play time (adventure walks/beach play/tree climbing), back to camp for lunch (either lunchboxes or build a fire and cook our own), then quieter creative free play time (I set out various art activities, drawing, books, or a group project/research interests). The daily adventure program will be influenced by the children’s current interests, weather and the seasons. CHILDCARE PHILOSOPHY:

Inspired by the forest kindergarten movement, my teaching is guided by the ‘nature-based‘ and ‘play-based’ learning philosophies; child-led and taking a holistic approach to support each individual child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development utilising nature as our classroom. I am enthusiastic about introducing children to new experiences and challenging them physically and creatively. I strongly believe in the value of home based education – with the low ratios it provides a higher quality of care and creates the opportunity to be out and about exploring the world around us.
