💬Talk Time Tuesday: It Runs in the Family!

With Father’s Day here in New Zealand on Sunday, and my daughter’s birthday last week, I can't help but think of, well...family❤️

There’s a great English expression: “It runs in the family.”

We use this when a particular quality, characteristic, talent or even habit is shared by several members of the same family.

In my family, there are definitely a few things that run in the family!

Our height, for one! 😄“They’re all tall - it definitely runs in the family!”

“A love of travel and adventure runs in our family.” ✈️🌎
"Our love of music and dancing🎶💃"...and probably a few personality traits and funny habits too!

We can use the expression in lots of ways: some things we inherit, and others we simply pick up from being around each other.

💬 What runs in your family? A talent, a personality trait, a love of something… or maybe a funny habit?

🌿 Talk Time Tuesday: Sometimes We Just Need to 'Unplug'

This weekend I had a little getaway to celebrate my daughter’s birthday!

When I asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday, she really didn’t want anything big. She said, “I just want to get away, be out in nature and spend some quality time together.”🌳❤️

Life gets busy. We spend so much time on our computers and phones, working, studying, socialising, rushing from one thing to the next. Sometimes you just feel like you need to get away from it all for a while.

And I think that's true no matter what age you are.

It was a lovely reminder that we don’t always need a big holiday to recharge. Sometimes a little road trip into the country, time out in nature, good food, some fresh air and time with someone you love is exactly what you need.

A perfect word for this is unplug. 🔌

Literally, to unplug means to disconnect something from electricity.

But we also use it to talk about taking a break from technology, work and the busyness of everyday life...giving ourselves a chance to slow down and just be present.

You might say:

“I really need to unplug this weekend.”
“We spent the day in nature and completely switched off.”
“It was lovely to get away and slow down.”

Some other great everyday expressions are get away, switch off, slow down, take time out.

This weekend we managed to do a little bit of all of them. 💚

💬 What about you? What helps you unplug and get away from it all?

🌿 Talk Time Tuesday: The Best Classroom Is Sometimes Outside!

What a beautiful Auckland winter day it was last Thursday! ☀️

This term, my ELP class has been learning about health and wellbeing; not only physical health, but also our mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. So last week, I took the learning outside! 🌳

We visited the beautiful Vaughan Park Retreat Centre in Long Bay, where we walked, talked, enjoyed the surroundings and, of course, shared a cuppa together. ☕😊

A special thank you to my friend who joined us and introduced the class to the labyrinth and its meaning. And talk about a small world.🌏 She is not only from the US, but from my home state of Wisconsin!

It was such a lovely way to bring together learning, community, culture, connection and wellbeing...and a reminder that we can learn so much from each other.

For English learners, getting out and about is also a great opportunity to use English naturally, connect with others and build confidence.

Sometimes, the best classroom really is outside. 🌿💚

💬 What helps your wellbeing...getting outside, walking, talking with friends over coffee, or something else?

🌿 Talk Time Tuesday: Put Down Roots 🌿🌱

If you know me, you will know how much I love flowers and plants and I especially think it has great meaning when we use them with what we call - metaphors.🌸

Last week we talked about “Bloom where you are planted.” 🌸
This week, let's go back a step...

Before we can bloom, sometimes we need to put down roots. 🌱
To put down roots means to settle in a place, build a life and begin to feel that you belong.

For those of us who are expats, like I am, we have moved to a new country, putting down roots can take time.

🏡 Making a new place feel like home
🤝 Making friends and connections
🗣️ Learning the language
💛 Becoming part of your community

Little by little, those roots grow. And eventually, we don't just live somewhere, we begin to belong there.

💬 Talk Time Tip:
🌳 Put down roots = to settle somewhere and make it your home.

What helped you put down roots somewhere new? 🌏

🌸 Talk Time Tuesday: Bloom Where You Are Planted 🌸

Last month I visited the beautiful Auckland Wintergardens. 🌺🌿

It was the middle of winter here in New Zealand 🇳🇿, but inside the gardens everything was colourful and blooming!

One flower that really caught my attention was the lotus. 🪷

The lotus grows in muddy water, but rises above the water and blooms into a beautiful flower. Because of this, the lotus is often used as a symbol of growth, strength and new beginnings.

It reminded me of an English expression:

🌱 “Bloom where you are planted.”

Of course, we're not really talking about flowers! 😊

It means to make the best of where you are, grow and thrive in your surroundings.

I think it's a lovely expression for anyone who has moved to a new country. 🌏

It takes time to learn the language, understand a different culture, make new friends and feel that you belong.

Little by little, though, we can begin to bloom where we are planted. 🌱🪷

💬 TALK TIME TIP

🌸 bloom = when a flower opens
🌱 bloom (figuratively) = to grow, develop or become more confident
🪴 bloom where you are planted = make the best of where you are and grow there

What helps you “bloom” where you are planted? 💜
