A Broken Social Elevator? How to Promote Social Mobility says that given current levels of inequality and intergenerational earnings mobility, it could take at least five generations or 150 years for the child of a poor family to reach the average income, on average across OECD countries.

A good opportunity to engage in the debate on Trade Wars!

Make a Difference with Economics (MADE) is proud to announce our 2018 Case Competition, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

Imagine yourself working at MFAT, doing research on real issues that affects every person in New Zealand. This is exactly what our case competition aims to emulate.

This is a unique opportunity which could lead to your research and findings being used by MFAT and other organisations to shape the future of New Zealand. MFAT really are keen to here students' findings on an area which hasn't been well researched to date.

MFAT wants advice on the key factors encouraging firms to maintain high value-added business activities in New Zealand as they develop their offshore presence. This is so MFAT can ensure businesses around New Zealand have incentives to keep their operations in New Zealand, rather than offshore them.

This competition is open to all students at the University of Auckland. In teams of four, you will have four weeks to work on a proposal that addresses this question with assistance from the MADE committee. Finalists get to present and network with an esteemed panel of judges.
