*This is a KAHEA for your support and kako’o!
This is it!!! Our funding application request is now live on the MCH website, and we need to pull together and support please!
It will take around 5 minutes to complete the survey, and must be completed before November 12!!! FYI.
This is a humble request that EVERYONE take the time to write in! Here’s some information below.
Laka Studios, a dedicated space for artists, growers, makers and practitioners, and our Halau in Aotearoa, Ka Pā Hula O Keaohololā, have submitted a proposal to the Manatū Taonga Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund. As part of the evaluation process, Manatū Taonga is interested to hear from the people that are intended to benefit from each proposal. I am writing in hopes that you may take the time to provide kōkua (support) for our grant proposal through a brief online survey. Your feedback will help to develop the proposal further. Follow the link to complete the survey and share this email with any others who may be interested. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Z63S3FV.
We are requesting funds to host Ho'okuleana, a cultural touring programme which will bring Hawaiian hula, hale building, and ukulele to Aotearoa for four weeks from Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival (February 22-25) to the Pasifika Festival (March 18-19) in 2023. The programme will weave communities together through the sharing of traditional knowledge from the Pacific. Hoʻokuleana will begin with kumu hula (hula teachers) from Ka Pā Hula O Kauanoe Wa’ahila in Honolulu and Ka Pā Hula O Keaohololā in Tāmaki Makaurau attending Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival on 23-25 February to honour the long-standing and deep pilina (relationship, connection) between kapa haka and hula and te reo Maori (Māori language) and ‘ōlelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language) revitalisation. A tour of Te Ika A Maui (North Island) will follow from 26 February to 18 March culminating in the day-long Hawaiian programme at the Pasifika Festival on 19 March 2023. Hula dancers will be accompanied by Grammy-nominated group Nā Hoa, ukulele master musicians from Hawaiʻi, who will create mele (song) to honour this tour of aroha and manaakitanga. The mele will be shared far and wide with the support of the New Zealand Ukulele Trust prior to the Pasifika Festival. A kanikapila jam session will be live-streamed from Pasifika with ukulele players from New Zealand and around the world invited to play together on stage and online.
Additionally during this time, hale builders will partner with a local community for a month to share traditional knowledge of Hawaiian architecture and engineering through the building of a hale. This will culminate in hale building demonstrations at Pasifika Festival, and the resulting hale will be gifted for future festivals to show the relationship and connection between Hawaiʻi and Aotearoa.
As someone who we think may benefit from and be interested in participating or supporting our proposal, we would appreciate your feedback to help show support and aloha. If you need more information about the feedback process, you can read more on the Manatū Taonga website.
Mahalo nui loa for your support. We hope this is just the beginning of your engagement with Hoʻokuleana!
