🌏🎓 Studying in New Zealand?
Two work visa options are opening up for graduates.
From Monday 16 November, there are two changes that can help international graduates take the next step from study into work:
✅ New visa: Short‑term Graduate Work Visa (SGWV)
A new visa for eligible graduates of vocational study, offering up to 6 months of open work rights — time to look for a job, gain local experience, and explore longer‑term options.
✅ Expanded eligibility: Post‑Study Work Visa (PSWV)
More graduates will now be eligible for a Post‑Study Work Visa of up to 12 months, with eligibility extended to students who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma and also hold a Bachelor’s degree.
These are one‑off visas and can only be granted once per individual.

📌
The Government is set to introduce a new citizenship test for people applying for New Zealand citizenship by grant.
From late 2027, those applying for citizenship by grant will undergo the test, which will include questions on the Bill of Rights Act, certain criminal offences, voting rights, democratic principles, the structure of government, and travel to and from New Zealand.
Applicants will be required to get 75% of questions correct to pass the test, which will be multi-choice.
New Zealand citizenship by grant requires holding a resident visa for at least five years, basic English, good character, and being present in the country for 240 days per year, or 1350 days total.
Those applying for citizenship by grant currently sign a declaration stating they understand the responsibilities and privileges of becoming a NZ citizen.

📌 Open work visas will now have one of two conditions:
✅Some allow any work, including self‑employment.
âś…Others require work for an employer.
The changes support clear and consistent visa conditions to support safer, fairer, and more compliant work practices for both migrants and employers. On any open work visa, visa holders cannot employ other people.
