Did you know this incredible building in Whangārei has a fascinating story?
1. The Hundertwasser Art Centre was inspired by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who made New Zealand his home for many years.
2. He believed that nature and architecture should exist together, which is why you'll find a living rooftop covered in plants.
3. Look up and you'll spot the iconic golden dome shining over the Town Basin.
4. This is one of just over 40 authentic Hundertwasser architectural projects in the world, and the last one ever completed.
5. Inside, you'll also find the largest collection of Hundertwasser artworks outside Vienna, alongside the Wairau Māori Art Gallery.
6. This masterpiece almost never happened. It took nearly 30 years of community fundraising, vision, and determination before it finally became a reality.
