Artnautica Yacht Design Ltd The main focus back then was to build original designs in wood and epoxy composite.

Dennis Harjamaa started a company called Artnautica Yacht Design & Boatworks in Finland in 1995 after having finished his boatbuilding and yacht design studies in the Maine, US. It turned out that a country that is covered by snow half of the year may not have been the ideal base for such efforts. Life took some interesting turns and two years later Dennis found himself in New Zealand where he got

LRC58 hull # 5 was just launched at Aluboot in Holland. This is the first twin engine version of this design. The pilothouse has been extended aft by 1m, and there is a double cabin aft, where the sisterships have had workshops. She has a Gyro stabiliser so I'm very much looking forward to the sea trials over the next few days.

Artnautica Europe – Long range cruiser The LRC58, a fuel efficient passagemaker is newly designed to work well as a permanent live-aboard but will be equally suited to coastal cruising, crossing oceans or drifting down inland waterways.

Broadsword has made landfall in Panama after a long passage from the Marquesas! I will hopefully get my hands on the relevant log book pages to make a proper analysis of speed and fuel consumption but having chatted with Finn O'Rourke the delivery skipper the consumption was at around 0.8 litres per mile on average, with speeds in the 7-8 knot range. She had a bit of extra fuel onboard but still managed to have about 1000 litres in reserve. Now Broadsword will go through the canal and carry on towards the Bahamas.

I just learned that the fantastic power cat Domino is for sale. I had the privilege to go onboard for a personal tour of this fine vessel at Minerva Reef and got quite jealous of her! Check it out here:

DOMINO 20 21/06/2016

We met a delightful cruising couple at South Minerva Reef during the recent trip to Fiji. Marie and JP have a most impressive motor catamaran, Domino, a 20m Tennant design that they built themselves. Marie writes a great blog:

I invite you to go check it out, not least because her latest entry is about the LRC58 Broadsword =)

Thanks Marie!

Hello again!
Here is a video of Broadsword making her way to Fiji. I joined the owner as crew, just the two of us onboard. What a fantastic trip, a real dream come true! My first ocean passage on a boat of my own design. Everything went well and we really enjoyed ourselves. We took four days to get to Minerva Reef, spent a week there and then two days to arrive in Fiji.
We picked good weather windows for the two legs, had no more than 20 knots of wind, from a variety of directions, does not really matter too much when motoring. The swell was perhaps 2-2.5 metres at times. There was a couple of moments when we had beam seas that I would have deployed paravanes had we had them but even without any stabilisation we were quite comfortable. I would not hesitate for a second to do the trip again without stabilisation, she felt really safe at all times.
An interesting observation was that I felt no "land legs" after arrival. After my previous passage on a 45' sailing yacht the land seemed to move so much the dock was not wide enough for me =)

Her is "Mr Toad", Broadsword's brand new custom tender I designed. She was built by Dickey Boats. I am at the helm, breaking all acceptable models of behaviour in an anchorage, speeding along as I do. The boat is 3.4m long by 1.3m wide so she just fits into the LRC58 cockpit. It was a bit too rainy to take my iPad along for the ride so I did not measure top speed but I would estimate just shy of 20 knots with 3 people onboard, certainly felt pretty fast given only 15hp. She seems to handle a bit of chop quite nicely.

Look who came for a visit yesterday afternoon at Islington Bay, Fernie! She is still looking fresh as a daisy. The owner/builder must really like the boat. :)

Attainable Adventure Cruising 05/04/2016

There is a great new article on www.morganscloud.com regarding controllable pitch propellers. I provided some of the photos. It is behind a paywall but I would warmly recommend anyone to join the site, there is a wealth of good practical advise to be had. I wish I would have found this site before staring to build my boat, it would have saved me a lot of head scratching an probably a bit of money as well.
