Today our tamariki had the exciting opportunity to explore a real-life ambulance!

We had so much fun learning about the important work of St John and getting to experience some of the equipment used by paramedics. Our tamariki enjoyed trying on the helmet, going up and down on the stretcher bed, and having a turn with the oxygen mask.

Of course, the highlight of the day was testing out the ambulance siren!

To top off such a special day, every tamariki was gifted a cuddly teddy bear from St John to take home.

A huge thank you to Auntie Sam and her wonderful colleagues from St John for visiting us, sharing your knowledge, and creating such a fun and memorable experience for our tamariki!

Fakafeta’i ki he Uike ’o e Lea Faka-Tonga

This week we were lucky enough to welcome a child’s Kui fefine (grandma) and her colleagues into our centre, who shared a beautiful Tongan greeting song and traditional dance with us.

Our tamariki were captivated and every day after the visit, they practised the song together, until they were ready to proudly perform it in front of their teachers and friends.

Mālō Mele for supporting us to celebrate Tongan Language Week at Piccolo Park.

Spring is nearly here! Our tamariki were inspired by the daisies in our garden today, collecting these and together making a flower shop.

This stemmed from one child’s interest and blossomed into a rich learning experience as children engaged in a collaborative effort to pick and ready bunches of flowers to sell. Tamariki used their real life knowledge and experiences to inform their play, using flower petals from the magnolia tree as money and creating a sign to display above their shop.

What a wonderful display of imagination and nature inspired learning!

Our tamariki visited Bunnings Wharehouse this week to choose seeds & plants for our garden this spring.

Before going, tamariki discussed what plants they wanted to grow in our garden & we made a list together - using this to guide our shopping & support early literacy learning.

Following along as we start planting…

Tamariki engage in pretend play together in our whenua room, making some delicious kai for their friends and their kaiako Ann.

Pretend play supports holistic development, as children use their knowledge about real life to inform their play.

This supports the development of imagination, problem solving, communication and social skills.
