Captions that include heading numbers also utilise a field called StyleRef which identifies the number of the current Heading 1 heading. This same field can be placed into a header to pick up the 'chapter' heading text automatically.

Tables can be time consuming. Here are a few tips for dealing with larger tables. Do try the Table Styles for consistent formatting - although some of the styles may be too racy for a Thesis.

A few tips for creating charts in Excel - particularly bar charts with lengthy labels, charts with multiple labels on the X axis and a series of pie charts that are identical in size and format.

Graphs and images are important to your finished work. They can be captioned automatically. But positioning on the page is often an issue. When inserted or pasted most graphics use a placement (wrap or layout) option called In Line with Text. This is ideal.
If you want the scaled graphic centered on the page, (and do be consistent) simply apply Centred Alignment to the paragraph that the graphic sits in.Click alongside the graphic to select the paragraph itself for this.
An unforseen snag with graphics that use other layout options is that their captions appear in floating text boxes that also have to be managed if and when graphics move. A graphic with text wrapping applied displays an Anchor in the margin when selected.
