Northern Health School

Northern Health School We provide community, in-home and hospital-based teaching to students who are unwell. Our main administrative office is based in Auckland.

We are one of three New Zealand health schools providing community, in-home and hospital based teaching to students who are too unwell to attend their regular school. We pride ourselves on providing individualised programmes tailored to meet the health and education needs of our students. This integrated service is, we believe, unique in the world and allows our teachers to provide a seamless serv

ice to each student, no matter what their treatment regime might be or where they may move to and from. We have a close relationship with each of the other two health schools (Central Regional Health School - lower North Island, and Southern Regional Health School - South Island) which makes the service we offer a national one. NHS teachers are based in several centres across the top half of the North Island and from there they cover the school's zone. Units include Whangarei, Auckland (North, Central, West and South, as well as in Starship Hospital and at Ronald McDonald House), Hamilton, Cambridge, Rotorua, Taupo, Tauranga, Gisborne, Whakatane and Taranaki. We also have a number of specialist units, such as the Wilson Centre on Auckland's North Shore.

Earlier in the term, the Waikato Unit was buzzing with excitement as we hosted our first-ever movie night. A group of students and teachers worked together to create a fun film appreciation evening as part of our Whānau Group offerings. Students had a blast sharing pizza, treats and plenty of laughs while enjoying the old-school classic The Princess Bride. The evening began with a few competitive rounds of UNO before settling in for the movie. Our night provided a relaxed opportunity for students and teachers to connect, strengthen film understanding and work towards transition goals. Parents and students appreciated the night and wanted to know, “when will you have the next one cause I’m in,” we hope this is the first of many for our unit.

Kia orāna kōtou kātoatoa! Last weeks Cooks islands language week celebrations!
The Auckland Central unit was privileged to host an authentic tivaevae from the Cook Islands and enjoyed tasting some island food. Through a wonderful display, students learnt more about the culture and heritage of the Cook Islands. They enjoyed practising some of the language during classroom check-in times and created their own beautiful tivaevae, inspired by the tivaevae on display.

Northern Health School Waikato Unit celebrated the learning of one of our Waikato Students projects by sharing her joy of Henna. Henna has been used for thousands of years all over the world. Our student embarked on an art journey embracing her love of Henna, identity, and research into traditional forms of art on the body. She researched the history of henna and the symbolism from different cultures plus symbols that were important to her identity and created three designs. Lots of fun was had trying it out on each other and teaching others how to work with henna (teachers included). The next stage is to adapt this traditional henna on skin to a piece of art. Check out our Waikato Unit attempts.

Vanuatu Bislama Language Week
“Tokbaot klaemet jenis – Hemi tru samting mo yumi mas lukaotem gud laef" - Talk about climate change – it is real, and we must look after life.”
This is the 2026 theme for Vanuatu Bislama Language Week.
At NHS Auckland Central, the popular Pacific display corner features the lovely paper crafted hibiscus flowers of Vanuatu’s national flower!
One thing that we have learnt is that the sounds in Bislama are very similar to those used in English and funny enough, there is no official spelling for Bislama so you may see differences in spelt words!
Next time you see a hibiscus, think HAEBISKUS

✨ Ngā mihi o Matariki-Puanga from Northern Health School ✨

As many of our students, whānau, caregivers, and staff enjoy the term break, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful Matariki-puanga celebrations that have taken place across all our NHS units in recent weeks.
Students and staff have come together to learn about the significance of Matariki-puanga, share kai, connect with one another, celebrate achievements, and look ahead to new opportunities. It has been a special time of learning, reflection, and community across our school.
The photos attached showcase Matariki-themed student work from our Auckland Central and Waikato South Units, including stones of hope, gratitude trees, shared kai, and creative artwork. This is just a sample of many celebrations and activities across Northern Health School units.
A special thank you to all our students who embraced Matariki activities and celebrations with such enthusiasm, creativity, and thoughtfulness ✨

⭐ Ngā mihi o Matariki-puanga and best wishes from all of us at Northern Health School.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week
E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le 'nu'u (From the high mountains are the blessings of the village) is the theme for Samoa Language week this year.
At Auckland Central, students and staff expanded their knowledge about Samoan culture and language by making siapo bookmarks and learning about the use of different ‘ula (necklaces) worn by Samoan people. Students and teachers enjoyed performing the sāsā clapping moves which made some amazing noise.
It is lovely to see and hear Samoa in action!
