Strong hands - ready for writing!
Our practical life activities are so much more than keeping little hands busy!
These carefully prepared experiences help children develop a strong pincer grip - the foundation for holding a pencil and learning to write. Handwriting is an important cognitive and fine-motor skill that helps brain development, executive function and memory retention.
Through spooning, transferring, hammering and other hands-on activities, children are also building:
- self confidence and independence
- practical skills
- early mathematical thinking
- concentration and focus through uninterrupted, purposeful play.

Making maths come alive - the Montessori way!
The Montessori materials offer so much opportunity for mathematical learning and exploration. Our 2 -6 year olds love to choose from our range of materials that make abstract maths concepts concrete, visible and tactile.

Kaitiakigatanga is a an important aspect of our philosophy here at Grey Lynn Montessori.
Our plants are well looked after; watered, washed and cared for by our tamariki each day.
The children love this practical life activity as it gives them a sense of responsibility for the wider world, as well as the ability to contribute positively to our beautiful shared environment. They also build independence, concentration and coordination as they complete these real world tasks.

Reflecting, connecting and celebrating Matariki. Last week, our tamariki enjoyed baking kumura cookies and sharing them with local
businesses and our neighbour, Grey Lynn School.

Montessori moments✨
Our tamariki have been deeply engaged with the Montessori materials, building focus, concentration, and accuracy through hands-on learning experiences. Each activity encourages children to slow down, think carefully, and take pride in completing tasks independently at their own pace.
As they repeat and refine their movements, children are developing perseverance, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility for their learning environment. It’s wonderful to see the joy and satisfaction on their faces as they master new skills and challenge themselves in meaningful ways.

From carefully pinning objects to confidently making marks on paper.
Through daily Montessori-inspired pre-writing experiences, our tamariki are slowly strengthening the small muscles in their hands and fingers through focused pinning work. These simple but meaningful activities help develop the control, coordination, and concentration needed for writing readiness over time.
As children move from pinning activities to drawing and early writing, they are building confidence, independence, and persistence while learning that their marks, movements, and ideas have meaning. It’s amazing to see how these small daily experiences support such important learning journeys.

So much fun in the sunshine today as the tamariki enjoyed playing badminton outside ☀️🏸
There was lots of running, reaching, swinging, and movement happening throughout the play space as children practised their gross motor skills in a fun and relaxed way. It was lovely to see their excitement as they worked together, took turns, and celebrated each other’s efforts 😊
Outdoor play experiences like this support coordination, confidence, and active exploration while also encouraging children to enjoy being physically active with their friends in the fresh air.

Tidy up time is all part of our learning.
After finishing our work, we carefully roll our mat, pack away our resources, and return everything to its place. These small routines help children build independence, responsibility, and respect for our environment and each other.
Through Montessori practices like this, children learn to care for the space around them, develop concentration, and take pride in completing a task from beginning to end.
