Take some time for yourself today to reset the batteries for the week ahead. Here we enter week 2 of the school holidays and I've been solo parenting while my OH has been travelling for work over the past two weeks. We've also had the NZ winter germs, so I'm looking forward to resetting and will enjoy a nice bubble bath and a good book. What will you do to look after yourself today?

Question of the Week: "What needs do you have that are unmet in the school holidays?"
Do you find that in the school holidays you struggle to fit in exercise, healthy eating, quiet time, work meetings, a course etc. that you would usually have time for?

Parenting as a neurodivergent mama or as a mama of a neurodivergent child can mean little time for you at the best of times, especially in the school holidays. Yet, looking after yourself and making time for things you enjoy is important too. Fill your bucket to support your family's needs.

The school holiday work/parenting juggle is here! When you are a neurodivergent mama, it's tough to balance work and household chores with parenting and entertaining your kids. The overwhelm and disorganisation is very real and can make you feel like you're losing your mind or failing at adulting, but you're not. The struggle is there for so many parents and we shouldn't beat ourselves up over it, but look for ways to help instead.
So I'm giving you the chance to get my Weekly Planning Tool for free, just comment, 'Yes please!' and I'll send you the link. Get organised, balanced and back in control and take away the guilt so you have a happy home this holidays.

When you are a neurodivergent parent or have a neurodivergent child, focusing on your own self care is really important. You need to look after yourself to have the resources to take of others and avoid the stressful burn out, dysregulation or impatience for yourself or others. So take time today to look after yourself. It doesn't have to be a big deal or cost you any money - a 10 minute online yoga session or 30 mins reading with a cuppa will help you to recharge and be ready to face the week. What will you do today to take care of yourself?

So much of human connection is based around food - date night dinners, takeaways with friends, BBQs, family picnics, night markets, food trucks, festivals, business brunch... But when you have sensory sensitivities, food can be really triggering and stressful. Sometimes it's just easier to avoid these situations, but then you feel left out. However, if you go, you feel anxious or frustrated with yourself or others, so it takes all the joy away from the situation. Why does human connection revolve around something that is so hard for you?

The first step is to identify what about the situation is so hard for you:
* Unfamiliar or strong food smells.
* Worry about what will be on the menu or that the food won't be cooked/presented in a familiar way.
* Fear of the unknown or of having to try something new, especially worry about what others might say if you don't want to try it.
* The very real struggle of trying to hear conversations across tables, or battling with hearing voices over background noise.
* Anxiety about others judgement, especially strangers or colleagues, or people who have been unkind in the past.
* Bright lights which cause over stimulation and dysregulation.
* Crowds - people jostling against you, noise, visual over stimulation.

Step two is to not beat yourself up or worry about spoiling the fun for everyone else. You deserve to have your needs and voice listened to.

Finally communicate your struggles to trusted others. Explain to people what you need from them and ask them what they need from you. Find a compromise that means it isn't always you making all the concessions and spending the rest of your weekend recovering after what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing time with friends.

Alternative ideas could include (depending on your unique sensory profile):
- A walk on the beach.
- Movie night where you bring safe snacks.
- Attending a book club.
- Watching live sports or on the TV.

Find what works for you and if you aren't sure, get in touch, as I can help you find your sensory comfort zone.
Happy Friday! šŸ˜€
